The UN Futures Lab was established in January 2023. It is a network that empowers the UN System and beyond to use futures thinking and strategic foresight in planning, policy- and decision-making. Driven by a Global Hub, we support teams, provide frameworks, and build capacity to help shape a more resilient and anticipatory UN. Our vision is to transition UN and international policy-making from short-term reactions to long-term sustainable choices. Our mission is to support the development of foresight capabilities, promoting a long-term vision in policy-making and programming. Key priorities: ⭐ Building foresight skills and practices by sharing guides, tools, and facilitating workshops. ⭐ Consolidating and sharing foresight knowledge by establishing networks and encouraging collaboration, with a global south focus. ⭐ Supporting decision-makers for planning and action by providing strategic foresight tools and insights to navigate uncertainties and anticipate future trends. We work through a demand-driven approach, building on already existing structures and initiatives through partnerships with UN entities and multistakeholder actors at global, regional, and national levels in support of Member States. Our team champions participatory foresight and inclusion by actively engaging diverse stakeholders across different geographies from Governments, academia, civil society, the private sector, and philanthropic organizations. Our impact goals: ⭐ Help drive organizational change by integrating futures and foresight into decision-making, planning, and action. ⭐ Make foresight more accessible. ⭐ Champion diverse perspectives and futures. ⭐ Tilt the balance away from global north dominance in the foresight space. 🌍 Exploring Futures Thinking and Foresight for Climate-Resilient and Inclusive Urban Development at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt #WUF12 🌍 In Cairo at the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt last week, we had the privilege of co-hosting an official side-event in partnership with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, C40 Cities Finance Facility (CFF) and UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme). We are so grateful for our inspiring panel which included representatives from C40 Cities Finance Facility (Viktoria Juliet Ach), UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) (Laura Petrella), Barcelona City Council (Maria Buhigas San José), and the Government of the State of Queretaro (Rogelio Alcocer Gómez). Together, we explored how futures thinking and strategic foresight can help shape urban planning processes to anticipate future trends, challenges, and opportunities and prepare for long-term uncertainties. Our key reflections include: ✨ Urban planning and strategic foresight are both forward-looking disciplines that apply participatory approaches to navigate uncertainty, tackle complexity, and foster innovation through collaboration; ✨ We need to find the right institutional anchors to ensure that insights can lead to concrete action, helping city governments balance immediate priorities with long-term visions in an agile way; ✨ There is great value in using foresight to foster local ownership and shift paradigms at the government, practitioner, and community levels. Following the panel discussion we facilitated a #ParticipatoryForesight session where participants all moved into group work and identified trends and drivers of change that are critical in realizing the cities of tomorrow. This annual gathering of Deputy Special Representatives/Envoys of the SG in peacekeeping and political missions is truly like a reunion—reconnecting with so many old friends and colleagues who are doing incredible work in some of the most challenging contexts. In a world facing increasing conflict, their on-the-ground efforts are more critical than ever, and I have immense respect for the impact they are making. This year, we had the chance to dig into the Pact for the Future, with particular emphasis on the New Agenda for Peace and UN 2.0. It was a rich conversation that will undoubtedly shape how we approach the future of peacekeeping and special political missions. I am especially proud of my colleagues from the UN Futures Lab/Global Hub for facilitating the session on strategic foresight as part of UN 2.0—the insights that emerged from the session were invaluable. A heartfelt thanks to United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) and ZIF - Zentrum für Internationale Friedenseinsätze gGmbH for their hard work in making this gathering possible. During the #SummitoftheFuture Action Days, the UN Futures Lab and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD - OCDE) in partnership with the Kingdom of Spain and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), hosted a high-level side-event on “Futures Thinking and Strategic Foresight to Safeguard Future Generations”. Panelists shared their experiences on how integrating foresight into decision-making can enhance governance and build a more anticipatory and resilient multilateral system, fit for future generations. This week, we held an internal retreat where colleagues from across our organization shared their ideas, energy, and passion. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and brought their unique perspectives to the table! Special thanks to our facilitators from the UN Futures Lab, Alana Poole, Lucía Soriano Irigaray 苏颜, who guided us with strategic foresight methods, helping us envision a sustainable and impactful future for UNITAR. Looking ahead, we will continue refining these insights with our Board and are planning a UNITAR-wide retreat to ensure every voice is heard in this important journey. We’re still buzzing from the inspiring Youth Action Day event that kicked off the Action Days at the #SummitoftheFuture. This youth-led day, convened by the United Nations Youth Office in collaboration with the UN Futures Lab, UNICEF Innocenti, World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO, International Trade Centre, UN Environment Programme , and IOM - UN Migration, truly elevated the voices of young people in the multilateral system, showing that they are not just the leaders of tomorrow – but also of today. Under the theme “#YouthLead: Strategic Foresight in Climate and Environmental Sustainability”, young people took the lead in discussing how we can drive breakthroughs in global cooperation, with a particular focus on climate action and sustainability. As preparation for the Youth Action Day event - and in celebration of International Youth Day on 12 August 2024 - the UN Youth Office and UN Futures Lab launched the Let #YouthLead for the Future Survey, as part of a participatory foresight activity designed to unlock the potential of youth as changemakers. Together with partners from various youth constituencies and UN entities, the team analyzed the 270 responses received from young people across 75 countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, Western Europe, and other States. A summary of this initial analysis captures the rich insights that have been shared. That’s a wrap on the #SummitoftheFuture, which resulted in the historic adoption of the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations! The UN Futures Lab and partners were active throughout the Action Days, driving home the importance of using #futuresthinking and #strategicforesight in #multilateralism.
