Assessment and impact of ambient air quality, especially in the coal field area, played significant role in assessing the pollution status in the respective areas. Opencast mining dominate the coal production scenario in India due to a number of favourable factors like economic viability, better safety, large scale mechanization , ease in mass production, higher productivity etc. In opencast mining, the surface alluvium and rock beds (i.e. overburden) below which coal lays are removed by various machineries to reach the coal deposits. Every opencast mining activity like drilling, blasting, excavation, loading, transportation, size reduction, stock piling, etc. releases particulate matter. Also burning of coal, exhaust from vehicle, blasting etc. produce a lot of gaseous pollutants like Oxides of sulpher, Nitrogen, Carbon mono-oxides etc. These are causing air pollution problem not only in mining premises but also in the surrounding areas. To study the status of air pollution caused by opencast coal mining, Sonepur – Bazari Opencast Project of Ranging Coalfield is selected. For the present purpose, primary observation and on spot measurement have been done for getting results. Particularly attempts are made for maintaining pollution free environment and so, necessary measure has been suggested.

Hazard is thus regarded as the disaster situation, in which some risk of disaster exists because the human population has set itself in situation of vulnerability. The occurrence of hazard largely depends upon location of any region. Thus any region with a mere fragile physical location is more prone to hazardous situations. These regions are known as the vulnerable ones as all those are intensely used by human being. Vulnerability is both physical and social in nature. An assessment of the risks faced by any region thus gives an idea regarding vulnerability of the same. The present study is regarding the vulnerability and risk assessment of the Patharpratima block of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. In this study an attempt has been taken to bring forward how the block is vulnerable to certain natural threats which have been clearly explained by an assessment of the risks faced by the same. The major objective of this study is to find out the vulnerability of the study area, both environmental and social and providing an assessment of the risks faced by the block. It was found from the field visits and primary survey that, a number of initiatives have been taken on the part of the GP to protect the embankments but they are all in vain due to the incoming surges and tidal currents which is a very common feature here. It has also been assigned that though human being are continuously proving themselves better with the passage of time, still we are at the mercy of nature. Nobody can do anything when a cyclone or a flood strikes in. Thus, it is better to make ourselves more prepared to face the challenges so that at least some lives can be saved.

Some selected and basic indicators have been used as measures of agricultural development, in terms of temporal trend as well as spatial patterns, which may be the prime factors behind the Regional Imbalances among the different parts of the region. The study area selected for the present study is the interfluve of Ajay-Mayurakshi River, parts of Birbhum district in West Bengal. Geographically, interfluve of Ajay-Mayurakshi River is a part of ancient " Rarh Bhumi " of Bengal, having favourable agro-environmental condition. The proposed interfluve region is mainly rain fed and intensified by mono-cropped cultivation system, still suffers by interregional disparity in agricultural development. The major objective of the present study is to undertake a comprehensive study to examine the general and existing land use pattern and to measure the land use efficiency with the help of cropping intensity index and finally to devise a suitable index of agricultural development and put focus on the regional disparities as well as regional problems; as an integral part of the agricultural development planning and management. For this specific study modern methodology and techniques of interpretation will be taken into account for final inference of the study.

Here, morphometric parameters and land use-land cover analysis has been considered as basic elements and applied to prioritization of sub-watersheds. The quantitative analysis of morphometric parameters and land use-land cover is found to be of immense utility in watershed prioritization for water balance, runoff coefficient facts, runoff concentration, soil and water conservation and natural resources management at micro level. The present work is an attempt to carry out a detailed study of linear, relief and shape aspects of morphometric parameters and present land use-land cover analysis in thirteen sub-watersheds of Neora River and their prioritization for overall and holistic management. Neora watershed is registered between 26°40'N to 27°10'N latitudes and 88°40'E to 88°50'E longitudes and covers an area of approximately 295 sq.km. The prioritization was carried out by assigning ranks to the individual indicators and a compound value (Cp) was calculated. Watersheds with highest Cp were of low priority while those with lowest Cp were of high priority. The results obtained from morphometric parameters and land use/ land cover analysis were correlated to find out the common sub-watershed priority falling under each priority. High priority indicates that those watersheds are susceptible to greater degree of erosion and application of soil conservation measures and need to manage immediately.

Riverbank erosion is one of the most unpredictable and critical type of disasters that takes toll... more Riverbank erosion is one of the most unpredictable and critical type of disasters that takes tolls less in lives but more in livelihood such as agricultural land and homesteads along with other livelihood options that are evacuated. River Diana, the main right bank tributary of the Jaldhaka, originates in Bhutan and flows south-westward into Jalpaiguri. The present study concentrates on Khairkata Village, a small village on the right bank of Diana where severe problems of bank erosion and spilling exist. Channel migration and severe bank failures have taken place almost every year that threatens the only livelihood option of the population. In addition, severe flooding destroys standing crops and disrupts communication. Because of the dynamic nature of the braided river and the failure of structural measures, the sufferings of the people continue. Long-term policies should be taken to cope up with the bank erosion taking into account the social and institutional adjustment measures. Introduction Stream bank erosion is a natural process that over time has resulted in the formation of the productive flood plains and alluvial terraces common in the middle and lower reaches of many river systems. Events like flooding can trigger dramatic and sudden changes in rivers and streams. However, land use and stream management can also trigger erosion responses. The responses can be complex, often resulting in accelerated rates of erosion and sometimes affecting stability for decades. Over-clearing of catchment and stream bank vegetation, poorly managed sand and gravel extraction, and stream straightening works are examples of management practices which result in accelerated rates of bank erosion. Human activities have altered the natural processes in the present day rivers. The activities in one location (riverbank protection, riverbed excavation) can alter the flow velocity patterns and thereby affect erosion on the opposite bank and the scouring/sedimentation process of the downstream riverbed (Miyazawa, Sunada & Sokhem, 2008).

Land utilization expressed a reciprocal relationship between the prevailing ecological condition and human society of a region. Land use is an important aspect of geographical studies and it is the process of exploring the land for a specific objectives. The increasing population pressure, low man-land ratio, increasing rate of degradation of land are responsible for the optimal utilization of land resources. The use and over utilization of land can be accessed from its detailed analysis. Agriculture is one of the most complex and dynamic expressions among all primary economic activities performed and its structural, functional and development capacities depend on the interaction of several attributes or elements of environment. Human population spread only to those areas of the world where agriculture was possible and agricultural developments has taking place.

Utilization of land, maintains reciprocal relationship between the prevailing ecological condition and human society of any region. Observation of Land and its uses are important aspects of geographical studies and also the processes of exploring the land for specific objectives. The concept of land use implies the interaction between land and environment. The increasing population pressure, low man-land ratio, increasing rate of degradation of land are also responsible for the optimal utilization of land resources. The spatial information on land utilization in the modes of statistical data and associated maps is essential for development, planning and management. The degree of utilization of land can be accessed from its detailed analysis which is the proper indicators of regional as well as local development. The present study entails different aspects of crop land use in connection with the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the same. Due to varied environmental situation proper planning and management practices of crop land restoration and development are taken up as a process of holistic development.
