The proposed design technique can produce a coupler with flat coupling over 50% fractional bandwidth, which is wider than the conventional lumped-element design methods. A prototype consisting of a capacitive coupled high-pass network is designed and fabricated to

This technique is accomplished by adding an NMOS cross-coupled pair under the traditional differential Colpitts VCO to enhance the oscillator startup condition. The signal analysis also supports this viewpoint and presents a device-choosing method to optimize the output power and phase noise. In realization, the circuit in the CMOS 0.18-μm technology, a U-shaped inductor, and thick oxide varactors are adopted in circuit to increase the quality factor of resonant tank. The performance of VCO demonstrates a center frequency of 16.7 GHz, a FOM of −186.2 dBc/Hz, and the phase noise of −110.42 dBc/Hz at the 1 MHz offset from the oscillation frequency. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. T... more This paper presents a new type of planar balun implemented by trans-directional (TRD) couplers. The formulation of the proposed balun is derived and the characteristics of the balun are analyzed. This balun requires no via-hole connection to ground. Thus, the phase errors caused by the inductive effect of via-holes are reduced. The configuration of TRD couplers also helps to reduce the complexity of dc biasing of active circuits in the next stage. Two prototypes are designed and built to verify the design concept. The first one, operated from 1.94 to 2.69 GHz, is realized by 3-dB TRD couplers. The second prototype, which is operated from 376 to 458 MHz, is constructed by two 4.8-dB TRD couplers. The dimension of this prototype is only 16.8 mm × 39.4 mm. This small area is achieved by meandering the coupled-line sections because its coupling effect is purely contributed by periodical shunt capacitors on the microstrip lines. Measured results are in good agreement with simulated results.

The proposed filters are constructed with using floating plate overlays to enhance the coupling between microstrip lines, and compensate the difference in phase velocity under even- and odd-mode excitations. The synthesis method is well developed and the design curves are given. Two Chebyshev filters with fractional bandwidths of 50% and 70%, respectively, were fabricated and measured to validate the design concept. All the measured results agree well with the simulation.

Fan design graphs are provided to determine the dimensions of each coupled stage. The features and advantages of the proposed circuit are analyzed in detail. Two experimental filters with design bandwidths of 70 and 90% are fabricated to verify the effectiveness of the modified structure. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The filter combines a second-order asymmetrically compact resonator filter with a source-load coupling mechanism to realize three transmission zeros; two zeros are arranged in the lower stopband, and one zero is located in the upper stopband. To achieve a compact layout size and a low insertion loss, a semilumped approach, which is accomplished with mixed utilization of high-impedance coplanar waveguide lines and lumped capacitors, is used to construct the chip filter. A K-band experimental prototype that has a very compact size of 0.35 × 0.8 mm2 was realized. The average insertion loss in the filter's passband is about 2.7 dB, the return loss is greater than 15 dB within the frequencies of 24-27.5 GHz, and the attenuation levels at the three transmission zeros all greater than 35 dB.
