Records for births and deaths that occurred in Chemung County are available through this office; however, there are no records on file prior to 1875.

Birth and death certificates may only be issued to eligible persons unless the record qualifies as genealogy.

Birth and death certificates and the indexes relating to births and deaths are not subject
to the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and are not open to public inspection.

Orders for certificates and genealogy records can be placed in person, by mail or fax.

Certified documents are 15foronecertificate,15 for one certificate, 15foronecertificate,10 for each additional certificate of the same person. Genealogy records $22.

Please note:

Records for births and deaths that occurred in another municipality cannot be ordered through this office. Contact the city, town, village, state or country where the birth or death occurred for information.

Marriage and divorce records are not issued or maintained at this office. For marriage records and information pertaining to those records contact the clerk where the original license was obtained. Direct any requests for divorce records to the County Clerks office where the divorce was filed.

For adoption records or information regarding adoptions; contact the State Department of Health or the Family Court of the municipality where the adoption was filed. For pre-adoption birth certificate information.

Social Security inquiries must be directed to the Social Security Administration.

Immunization records are not maintained at this office; contact the physician’s office, hospital or clinic where the immunizations were given.

VITAL RECORDS: WALK-IN SERVICE INFORMATION

This office is located in the Peter A. Chalk Pavilion at the Chemung County Health Center, 103 Washington Street Elmira, New York 14901. Office hours are Monday thru Friday 8:30am to Noon & 1:00pm to 4:30pm*, closed most National Holidays.

Qualified applicants can obtain certified birth or death certificates by visiting this office. Depending on availability of the record and time constraints most certificate orders can be processed and filled immediately. If a birth record has been corrected or amended it may not be readily available and will need to be ordered from Albany causing a delay in processing.
