Spireites win to secure home tie (original) (raw)

James Berry scored twice as the Spireites ended the Bristol Street Motors Trophy group stage with a 3-2 victory against Grimsby Town at the SMH Group Stadium.

He and Paddy Madden had goals cancelled out by Lewis Cass and Cameron Gardner before the winger popped up with a second-half winner.

Paul Cook made seven changes from the weekend with Ryan Boot, Jamie Grimes, Ollie Banks and Berry being the only survivors.

It was one of the players left in that opened the scoring after eight minutes. Berry was allowed to make some space for himself before firing an effort from 25 yards past Jordan Wright.

Grimsby found a leveller ten minutes later; Cass barrelled down on goal and saw his first effort blocked by Liam Mandeville before converting at the second attempt.

Just after the re-start, John Fleck went down and was forced off with an injury – Darren Oldaker was his replacement.

As the clock ticked past the half-hour mark, Justin Obikwu had a golden chance for the visitors but found Boot in his way as the goalkeeper turned the ball away with his feet.

Chesterfield re-took the lead with five minutes to go until half time. Branden Horton’s low cross was picked up by Madden, who rounded Wright and tapped home from close-range.

Both sides had another chance before the break with Madden heading wide and Gardner hitting the side-netting for Grimsby.

Early into the second period, the away side got back on level terms. Obikwu found Gardner inside the penalty area and the forward powered his effort past Boot.

Not long after the kick-off, the Spireites were forced to make a second change as Grimes was replaced by Tom Naylor.

The Blues pushed for the third goal and Madden came very close to getting it. He latched onto two crosses from Banks – flicking one onto the crossbar and heading the other wide.

The striker would turn provider for the third goal; his cutback was swept home at the first attempt by Berry, for his second of the night.

Chesterfield made their final changes on the 68th minute as Devan Tanton, Armando Dobra and Will Grigg replaces Mike Jones, Berry and Madden.

Tyrone Williams headed wide soon after, but Cook’s side were able to see out the game for the full three points.
