The six cancer registries of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) show a 10 times lower incidence of GBC per 1 00 000 in South India compared with the North. The objective of present study was to assess the epidemiological and pathological profile of gallstone disease and GBC patients of Eastern India visiting tertiary care hospital of Kolkata. Method: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted, over a period of 18 months, at a tertiary referral hospital of Kolkata. In this study, 66 gallstone disease patients and 24 gallbladder cancer patients who undergone surgery were included in the study after their written informed consent. Pathological profile, and staging and type of gallbladder cancer were collected. Results: Male to female ratio was 1:2 & 1:3 for GSD and GBC respectively. We found that nearly half (45.4%) GSD patients were in the age group of 21-40 years and more than half (58.6%) GBC patients were in age group of 41-60 years. Majority had multiple stones (57.6%) and cholesterol stones were most common (59.1%). Out of 24 GBC patients, nearly one-third (33.3%) had stage II cancer and only 12.5% patients had stage IV cancer. More than one-fourth (29.2%) GBC patients had poorly differentiated carcinoma. Conclusion: The results of this study reaffirm that female gender and patients in fourth decade are strong predisposing factor for GSD and GBC. Large population based multicentric analytical study is further warranted.

India has created considerable improvement in control, prevention and eradication of certain communicable diseases. Few such diseases that have been effectively controlled are polio, smallpox, vector-borne illness, nipah, Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) and so on. These achievements are the outcome of an active surveillance system incorporated at community, facility, and health system level. Any of these progresses is impossible without a robust public health surveillance structure. Therefore, enhancing the public health surveillance system further will be helpful in managing upcoming pandemics at its earliest. Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences, Jun 21, 2021

BACKGROUND Breakfast is an important meal since it refuels the body after long night fasting. Reg... more BACKGROUND Breakfast is an important meal since it refuels the body after long night fasting. Regular intake of breakfast must have favourable supply of both micronutrients and macronutrients to maintain a body mass index (BMI) in the normal range. Despite its importance, the rate of skipping breakfast is observed to be alarmingly increasing among medical students. Therefore, the present study was undertaken to understand the dietary patterns, and physical activity level, and analyse the association of skipping breakfast with obesity among medical students. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 174 medical undergraduate students aged between 18 and 23 years in a tertiary care teaching hospital from August 2019 to October 2019. A pretested, semi-structured, validated, self-administered questionnaire was used to assess the profile, physical activity, food consumption pattern, and perception about the importance of breakfast meal. Regression analysis was done. Odds ratio was calculated. RESULTS About 23.6 % and 27 % of the study participants were found to be overweight and obese respectively. Only 51.1 % of study participants were involved in physical activity. 17.2 % of medical students skipped their breakfast regularly and 71.6 % were aware that skipping breakfast would affect work efficacy and span of concentration. Age group of 22-23 years (OR: 19.5, 95 % CI; 2.08, 183.70) was significantly associated with obesity. Skipping breakfast (OR, 0.45, 95 % CI: 0.23, 0.90) was not found to be associated with obesity. CONCLUSIONS Our study found that more than one fourth participants were obese and one third were skipping breakfast daily or more than thrice a week. There was no association between obesity and skipping of breakfast meal. However, the importance of breakfast meal in a day cannot be ignored. Awareness programs to practice healthy eating habits might help in prevention of obesity and overweight among students.

While a good proportion of the population accepts the vaccine, still a gap remains in the immunisation coverage in India. A growing number of people are delaying or refusing the vaccines. This phenomenon is called “vaccine hesitancy.” In spite of the tremendous effort to develop an effective COVID 19 vaccine, a major deterrent for coverage of the same is vaccine hesitancy towards the approved and future COVID-19 vaccination. Consideration and addressing the determinants for such hesitancy is the need of the hour to surge the vaccine coverage. The databases were searched for English- language articles. The data were extracted from PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar databases and websites including WHO, UNICEF etc. Keywords such as vaccine hesitancy, vaccine acceptance, parents, confidence, counselling etc were used. This review was done to explore the history and factors responsi...

This review aimed to explore the recommended practices, advantages of breastfeeding, and age-appropriate complementary feeding practices. Colostrum, which serves as the first immunization for the newborn, is largely ignored owing to the various myths surrounding it in developing countries. The World Health Organization recommends an early initiation of breastfeeding within one hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months to combat killer diseases such as diarrheal diseases, pneumonia, and obesity. On the other hand, complementary feeding is recommended with increase in the diversity, quantity, consistency and frequency as the child gets older along with continued breastfeeding for 12 months. Inappropriate complementary feeding is one of the major causes of malnutrition in children under the age of 5 years. Hence, appropriate guidance should be given to caregivers and health-care workers ...
