All Set for November 11th—2nd JFAV Filipinotown Veterans Day Parade
in Los Angeles
Los Angeles—All are set for the 2nd Filipinotown Veterans Day Parade
in Los Angeles.
The People's Community Organization for Reform and Empowerment
(Peoples CORE) and the Justice for the Filipino American Veterans
(JFAV) campaign is spearheading the 2nd "Filipinotown Veterans Day
Parade and March for Recognition, Justice and Equity" on November 11,
2002 from 9:00 to 2:00 p.m. The theme for the parade and march
is: "Recognize the Filipino Veterans Now! Justice and Equity Now!"
People's CORE Executive Director Joe Navidad said: "We who have
started the veterans campaign since the early 1990's with the
formation of the December 7th Movement (D7M), which held the first
massive mass action in the Federal Building on Wilshire Boulevard on
December 7, 1993 will not let up with our efforts despite the
setbacks in the US Congress. The more we will persevere!
We invite everyone to join the march, express your support for the
Filipino veterans through displays, floats, signs and streamers. We
welcome in kind donations such as food and drinks for the
participants. By this mass action we can show the US Congress that we
have not forgotten our veterans and we will continue on the struggle
for veterans recognition and justice."
The Veterans Day Parade will start at 9:00 a.m. at the Filipino
American Community of Los Angeles (FACLA), located at 1740 Temple
Street. Following the parade and march there will speakers and
cultural performances.
Confirmed speakers include Congressman Xavier Beccera,Hila Solis,
Assemblymembers George Nakano and Herb Wesson and District 13
Councilmember Eric Garcetti, Peoples CORE Executive Director Joe
Navidad, JFAV Coordinator Peping Baclig, FASGI Executive Director
Susan Maquindang, Scott Schiffer and others. The grand marshal for
the parade will be Councilmember Eric Garcetti and the deputy grand
marshal Philippine town Mayor Jacinto "Jay" Valencia.
Veterans Ready for Full Mobilization
Veterans organizations are preparing for full mobilization for the
Veterans Day Parade. The American Coalition for Filipino Veterans
(ACFV) headed by Faustino "Peping" Baclig, Society of Guerrillas and
Scouts (SGS) headed by Bong Agbunag and Manny Aquino, Los Angeles
Veterans Forum headed by Commander Franco Arcebal, United Filipino
American Veterans (UFAV) headed by Cres Abad, Eugene Mondoc and
Arcadio Basat, and 80 veterans from the San Fernando Valley headed by
Commander Segundo Calderon are all getting ready for the parade.
Floats supporting the veterans issue mounted on small trucks will be
provided by GABRIELA –LA, FACLA, National Philtown USA and FASGI.
Health services booths will provide free diabetes screenings, blood
pressure and other health screenings for adults and senior citizens
before and after the march-parade. Free lunch will also be provided
for all the participants. Parking will be at the Burlington St. and
surrounding streets around FACLA compound.
