Thirsty Curses (original) (raw)
Recently I was able to connect with Raleigh, NC eclectic rock band, Thirsty Curses, to ask them about their great new single called “Breakfast Schemckfast.” In this brief interview, I asked them about their forthcoming LP called Music is a Scam, and what fans of their band can expect when they listen to the record front-to-back. Music is a Scam releases digitally on February 27th, and vinyl pre-orders are on-going here.
Your new single, called “Breakfast Schmeckfast,” has a very ska/punk feel to it. Was that intentional during the writing process? If not, how did this song come about?
I actually wrote the song a while back. The bass player Clayton Herring and I have been playing music together off and on for a long time. The song was floating around during some projects back in the day but it never really got recorded. At some point last year I suggested that we bring back Breakfast, like Hardee’s or Carl’s Jr…
And then we did. But yeah – we grew up listening to Op Ivy, Less than Jake, Against All Authority, Sublime etc., so the ska/punk influence is pretty ingrained in our music DNA. We leaned into it too a bit and enlisted our friends Tee Corbett (trumpet) and Jason Froeber (saxophone) to add horns.
What was the inspiration behind the lyrics of the new single?
It’s basically an exercise in coming to terms with being an outcast, directionless weirdo and saying “hey well whatever. I’m not the only one. We got each other. Let’s make some music and get some breakfast. Maybe at Hardee’s or Carl’s Jr.”
Your new album, called Music is a Scam, releases digitally on February 27th. What do you hope fans will take away from listening to it from front to back?
I think from front to back it’s the best and most complete album we’ve done. I hope fans will feel the same. It’s also a good reflection of our range and versatility. We hit a lot of different genres. Different themes. Different moods. But it all fits and flows together somehow.
I don’t think there’s anyone else doing what we’re doing or anyone else who sounds like us. We’ve got our own thing going and this album is the best representation to date of whatever that thing is…It would obviously be cool if people came away as excited about it as we are. If not, we still hope you’ll say hi if you bump into us at Hardee’s or Carl’s Jr.
