Research paper thumbnail of Seamlessly integrating service discovery into UML requirements processes

Proceedings of the 2006 international workshop on Service-oriented software engineering - SOSE '06, 2006

This paper reports a new service discovery tool designed to integrate with the Rational Unified Process and UML and offer seamless generation of service queries from requirements specifications. It describes tool features that overcome research challenges for seamless integration. It demonstrates these features from an example of a real-world, service-based automotive application.

Our aim is to increase understanding of the way in which older people can be more involved in designing digital devices to suit their own needs. We describe a creative process involving designers and older people in completing cultural probes and participating in creative workshops. We analyse the creative process based on our observations of stimuli and blocks to creative thinking during the workshops. Our results indicate that the most productive way to involve older people in the design of digital devices for the older population may be to have older people working alongside designers during the creative design process.

This paper describes the application of RESCUE, a process that integrates 4 modelling techniques to model and analyse stakeholder requirements for DMAN, a system for scheduling and managing the departure of aircraft from major European airports. It describes how human activity, use case and i* modelling were applied and integrated using synchronisation checks to model requirements on DMAN. Synchronisation checks applied at predefined stages in RESCUE revealed omissions and potential inconsistencies in the models and stakeholder requirements that, in turn, led to improvements to the models and resulting specification. The paper ends with implications for requirements model integration, and describes future work to extend and apply RESCUE.

This paper reports new techniques developed by the EU-funded SeCSE Integrated Project that enable service discovery during early requirements processes and exploit discovered services to enhance requirements specifications. The paper describes the algorithm for discovering services from requirements expressed using structured natural language, and demonstrates it using an automotive example. The paper also reports a first evaluation of the utility of the environment that implements this algorithm when improving the specification of requirements with retrieved services.

It reports recent extensions to the ART-SCENE scenario environment to generate scenarios that combine structured text with graphic, image, video and audio documents to support requirements discovery. It presents results from a controlled empirical study and industrial application in which ART-SCENE was used to discover requirements for a new medical system in a hospital to explore 3 questions about the cost-effectiveness of rich media scenarios. Findings revealed that rich media scenarios can lead to the discovery of new requirements during scenario walkthroughs, but the cost of capturing data for and setting up the scenarios was high, and the totals of requirements documented with rich media scenarios was not higher than with structured text scenarios. The paper ends by offering possible explanations of the results and outlining future work.

We wish to support designers in engaging more flexibly and effectively in conversations that are characterized by both innovation and reflective, critical thinking, and that take place in both co-located and distributed settings. Key technological aspects of this support include the management and display of design ...

This tutorial is relevant to anyone involved in large projects that are exploiting new technologies or developing new interactive systems and media. The tutorial will familiarize participants with both the need for creativity, and the techniques and tools to bring this about. It will interleave short presentations with group work activities that allow participants to use different techniques for stimulating creativity. No prior knowledge of creativity models or techniques is expected. Over the last 6 years, the presenters have designed and run 14 different creativity workshops in projects developing large-scale interactive systems for major clients. Neil Maiden is Professor of Systems Engineering in the Centre for HCI Design at City University, and Sara Jones is the RCUK academic fellow in creative socio-technical system design.

This work was carried out as part of a real project for Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation. We describe, in outline, the kinds of models we used, and present some examples of the ways in which these models influenced the specification of use cases and requirements for the future system. We end with a discussion of lessons learnt.
