Milwaukee: City of Festivals (original) (raw)
Obvious Summerfest admission question isn't obvious enough!
SO, if you buy a noon-4pm admission, are you all rounded up and kicked out at 4pm, or is it good all day (as long as you arrive before 4pm)? Summerfest.com and their ticket purchasing site simply say that admission is "good from noon to 4pm"...which could kind of go either way.
/hope somebody actually sees this

Hello,
I figured I would dust off my LJ account in order to put the word out there about something that I'm looking for and to see if I get any responses to my inquiry.
A long time ago, I used to play a game called Vampire: The Masquerade and I'm anxious to get back in the habit again. The problem is that I don't know of any games in the area that are still running. I'm not too particular about it being table top or LARP, but I would like to play again in some capacity.
The only game that I know of that's still operating is OWBN and they don't seem to have a working e-mail address out there and their website doesn't look finished yet.
If anyone knows of a game that's running and looking for new players, please respond here or reach out to me at innocentdeviant@gmail.com
Thank you!

Can anyone tell me where Central Park Ballroom was? A music venue that was in business from 1989 to 1991, as far as I can tell.

hi all, i'm going to be out of the country for a span of about three weeks. this trip is coming up in about a week and a half and the person who was originally going to watch my dog cannot do it anymore (of course).
can anyone recommend a good boarding facility in the area? i'd be willing to go out of milwaukee too.
unfortunately my dog HATES other dogs (loves people though) so a doggy daycare situation would not work at all, and in fact he will bark and try to sound ferocious when he sees other dogs, so i would like a facility that has kennels just on one side of the hallway or maybe private areas for reactive dogs (if such things exist).
if anyone has some good leads that would be excellent!!! thank you!!! :)

I'm a stay at home mom (and student) to a 4 month old. I've been cooped up all winter and I'm going nuts. I'm looking for any sort of class I can do with my son, even if we have to wait until he's 6 months. I'd really like a yoga class but the youngest ages I've seen offered around here is 2 years. And the youngest age I've seen for swimming is 18 months. I have family in Madison and they've done yoga locally with their 6 month old, but I'm obviously not driving to Madison.
Does anyone know of anything around here that I can do with a 6 month old, besides walking through museums and stores, and parenting networks that just sit around and discuss motherhood? I need to actually MOVE and walks only go so far. I'm in West Allis but I'll drive a bit if it means getting out of the house. Thanks!
a swimsuit? this time of year??

ok this might be a long shot, but here goes. i'm leaving for the bahamas on monday and i totally slacked on looking into buying a swimsuit. are there any stores in town that might possibly have swimwear in some hidden corner of the store? or even a sporting goods store that might carry swimwear?
thanks so much!!!
No luck with craiglists so tryin' here!

I don't know how many of you know about this, but if you live in an area with the 4 inch snow rule, you can sign up to receive text alerts from the city when the 4 inch rule is in effect. I used this last year, and it worked out well if I didn't realize that the city declared a snow emergency / 4 inch rule.
You can sign up here: http://itmdapps.milwaukee.gov/login/login/SMS_main.jsp

I'm being induced with my first kiddo in two weeks and just realized I never picked a pediatrician... oops. Does anyone have any recommendations? Obviously I have to make sure the doc is in network with my insurance, but I figured this is a place to start.
I live in 'stallis but am willing to drive a little bit (20 minutes or so) for a good doctor. All I'm really looking for is a practice with a good on call/after hours service for those middle of the night issues, especially with a new born, and someone who isn't going to throw an antibiotic at the kid for every cough/sniffle/sneeze he has. Someone who does some holistic approaches would be nice, but I won't hold my breath on that one.
Thanks in advance!

Hello, fellow Milwaukee citizens!
I just wanted to share this with you- I heard about this on KISS FM this morning: It's free taxi rides for Halloween. It's on Facebook. A local law firm (Warshafsky, teamed up with Mothers Against Drunk Driving) is giving away the taxi rides. I'm not sure if it's all weekend, or what, but you have to go to their Facebook page, like them, and pledge to not drive under the influence this weekend. I also believe you have to call to get it, but I'm not sure of the details- but it's worth checking into if you're gonna be out and drinking! It also might be warmer than walking ;)
Here's the link: http://www.facebook.com/WarshafskyLaw
Have a great weekend, everyone!

some friends and i are going to be in milwaukee tomorrow night and want to go out (downtown, probably). are we going to look completely stupid if we wear halloween costumes or are there going to be other people out who are dressed up?
is parking downtown going to be a nightmare over the weekend? would we be better off taking the bus to and from our hotel (in glendale)? how late do cabs run?
sorry if these are stupid questions...we're just trying to figure it all out. thanks!! =)

My recent experience with getting my security deposit back from my previous landlord was nothing short of ridiculous (srsly, she tried to charge me for not cleaning behind the fridge). Is there a website where I can warn people not to rent an apartment from one of her buildings?

This woman is looking for her missing 16-year old. I know a lot of people in this community have Illinois connections, even pretty far south, so I figured it couldn't hurt to post this here. Thanks for taking the time.
Free Amazon Prime for students
September 6th, 2010
Amazon is currently giving free 1 year memberships to Amazon Prime (free 2 day shipping, $3.99 overnight shipping) to current students with a .edu email address: http://www.amazon.com/gp/student/signup/info I'm not sure how long they're offering this (it doesn't say on the site).
Just thought i'd give fellow students the heads up on this in case you haven't heard about it yet. This is going to save me a ton on shipping textbooks this year!

Also known as "where the hell do I park the first Friday of the month?"
Up until last month, I lived in a duplex on the East Side with a garage. Now I live in a duplex on the East Side with no garage. I have my nighttime parking permit and that's all good. Problem is the street sweeping schedule. I have a full-time job, but my schedule changes from day to day and usually I don't work until late morning (10:30 or later) on Fridays. Last month, I figured, "Good! The other side of the street is every third Friday, my side of the street is every first. Easy enough, I'll park on the other side of the street!" Not so easy, I got a $33 ticket for parking on that side of the street (some residential parking program which I won't even go into considering I was literally parked across from my front door -- except on the opposite side of the street).
The first Friday of the month is coming up and I have to wonder...where the hell do I park?? I (obviously) don't want to be towed, but I also don't want to go out for a leisurely drive from 8-10:30 AM before I actually have to leave for work. And apparently I can't park on the other side of the street without facing another $33 ticket.
Places to Study on the West Side?
August 24th, 2010
Are there any decent places to study in the West Allis/Tosa/West Milwaukee area? A few years ago I used to study at the Starbucks at Hwy 100 and I-94, but I remember it being so crowded you either couldn't park or couldn't get a table. The Alterra at 91st and North is much of the same.
I need reasonable amounts of noise and activity (so no libraries) and some later hours would be nice. I don't even really need wifi. Come on, West Siders, help a girl out! What am I not thinking of?

Next weekend, my boyfriend and I, and another couple, want to go camping. In the past, we've done the canoe trip from Sauk City to Spring Green/Hwy 14. We love the camping that provides--being on the sand dunes keeps away the bugs, and on non-holiday weekends, you don't have to worry about other people at all.
Unfortunately though, a canoe trip is kind of expensive--for a three day trip for each couple, the canoe rental/transportation is about 100andweusuallyspendanother100 and we usually spend another 100andweusuallyspendanother100 on food, gas, supplies, and all that fun stuff.
But the no bugs/no people thing is really nice, so we're wondering where else we can get that. We looked at just camping at Point Beach State Park--we could go hiking during the day instead of canoeing--but the map of the campground looks like everyone's sort of packed in together. Has anyone ever been there? Is it usually pretty busy on non-holiday weekends or do you think we'd be able to remain pretty secluded?
Do you have any other recommendations? We're game for pretty much anything that's outdoors, cheap, and not crowded (and no bugs would be nice too! There's only so many mosquito bites one person can take!).
Thanks!
