This study investigates the role of the e-tutor within an open distance learning (ODL) higher edu... more This study investigates the role of the e-tutor within an open distance learning (ODL) higher education institution in terms of perceptions of the work roles and assessment of the competencies of the e-tutor. As part of the universities' strategic plan the importance of providing excellent service to learners is strongly emphasised. E-tutors are the learner's first and foremost contact with the university; they invariably become the face of the ODL university for the geographically distant learner. E-tutors are therefore strategically important for the perceived quality and attractiveness of the university, however, they can also be a vulnerable link in the university's educational chain. The process of online tutoring therefore becomes a critical success factor in learners' acceptance of e-learning. The first phase of this research focuses on the e-tutor's perspective, investigating the competencies required by etutors to function effectively in an online environment, as well as their perceived role. A survey was administered to e-tutors in the College of Economic and Management Sciences of the university to assess their perceived roles and competencies. Understanding the importance of these roles and identifying necessary tutoring skills is paramount for the success of e-learning solutions.

does it mean to take a writerly approach to research? My co-authors and I have pondered this ques... more does it mean to take a writerly approach to research? My co-authors and I have pondered this question over the past five years as they have each worked with me to design and draft dissertations that combine their work as literacy researchers with their love of writing. Each of them has moved toward storytelling as a compelling and valid way to reveal the data they have gathered. Their writerly decisions, however, do not come without consequences. As I met with each of them individually, and now as we have composed this article collaboratively, we have asked ourselves, over and over again: How much narrating versus theorizing? How much showing versus telling? How much authorial presence versus straight reporting? Eventually, we have arrived at an even larger question: What allows a story to be accepted as research? What, in other words, gives it credibility? Those of us who love stories and want them, somehow, to count, to be seen as reliable and valuable records of experience, come ...

Designed for teachers and researchers interested in the study of the composing process, this guid... more Designed for teachers and researchers interested in the study of the composing process, this guide introduces a method of analysis that can be applied to data from a range of different cases. Specifically, the guide offers a simple, direct coding scheme for, describing the movements occurring during composing that involves four procedures: teaching writers how to compose aloud, taping the composing aloud sessions, coding the tapes onto the composing style sheets, and analyzing the composing style sheet. The guide describes the style sheet as a tool to (1) reduce a lengthy composing tape to a chart; (2) introduce a coding system that can be replicated; (3) sort specific, observable behaviors into defined categories that make it possible to discern regularities and patterns within and across cases; (4) provide a way of determining how parts of the process relate to the whole; and (5) present the sequences of movements that occur during composing as they unfold. The findings from a study of five student dertaker to determine how unskilled college writers com... more The findings from a study of five student dertaker to determine how unskilled college writers compose, whether their writing processes can be analyzed in a systematic manner, and what an increased understanding of those processes suggests about the nature cf composing and about the manner in which writing is taught are presented in this paper. The first part summarizes the goals of the study, the kinds of data collected, and the research methods Pmpitly ed. The second par* is a synopsis cf the case study of one of the student writers. The third part presents a condensed version of the findings on the composing process and discusses these findings in light of current pedagogical, practice and research design.
