A Western, postmodern mindset is emphasized, however the global church is not ignored. We live in a globalized society thanks to technology, and so an entire chapter is dedicated to the global church (199-214). One can also find advice on using both the Old and New Testaments and the need for Christ as well as explanations on diversity within today’s congregations and methods for understanding their mindset. The collection of authors tapped by Scott Gibson is diverse. The field includes active preachers and missionaries, however it tilts heavily toward theologians from academia (253-5). I personally would have preferred more contributions from practitioners than professors, however the editor’s objectives were met. I found the work to be helpful in my growth as a chaplain and was able to incorporate insights into my most recent sermons.

The author, Dr. Brad S. Gregory, is currently a history professor at the University of Notre Dame. His primary research interests, as evidenced by this book, center on European history with a particular focus on Christianity in the Reformation Era. The reader will quickly learn that he is indeed a master of his craft. Starting from the present realities of the secularized Western world, specifically western Europe and North America, this book presents in exquisite detail how historical events influenced the current environment as it relates to most everything – science, government, higher education, economics, sociology and, of course, religion. The Protestant Reformation is the focal point in his historical analysis, however the events and situations that were brought about as a result of the Reformation are equally documented. In the end, Dr. Gregory seeks to evidence his perspective that the secularized modern Western world was influenced by the Protestant Reformation; an influence that continues to this day (Gregory 2012, Kindle Edition, Location 16).
