Favoriting May 19, 2024: Guest set by Simon Chioini

Simon visited the CKUT studio to play some unreleased music, as well as his track Ecocentre released on the 2021 Causal Chain VA-002 compilation.

Hailing from a local community of experimental artists, Simon Chioini crafts music with a hybrid aesthetic, blending genres and electronic sounds. Through acousmatic and techno-inspired works, his forays into both concert music and club music are deeply rooted in his academic research and a genuine passion for underground currents of recent decades.

Under the guidance of Professor Myriam Boucher, he is currently pursuing a PhD in music, specializing in Composition and Sound Art at the University of Montréal. His research-creation project aims to illustrate various sound ecology practices to establish genre models in the field of electroacoustic music. It involves designing creative processes within the environments around us to cultivate attention to our relationships with our surroundings. This nuanced relationship with space constitutes a relational and situational musical experience where sound is employed as the primary element in works for specific locations.

His latest album, "Climat avenir," released on the Barcelona-based label Anòmia, depicts a series of meticulously crafted electronic soundscapes. Nature serves as a structural model where the complexity, diversity, and symbiosis of elements resemble an ecosystem. The cohesion of materials delineates a unique terrain, represented by sophisticated sound design with fluorescent, abrasive, and corrosive tones.

He performs in intimate venues in Montréal (Datcha, Société des arts technologiques, Eastern Bloc) and New York (The Gateway, Bossa Nova Civic Club, Trans-Pecos). Internationally, he has participated in festivals such as Mutek (Montréal 2023/2020/2018/2016, Buenos Aires 2018, Mexico 2017), Sight & Sound (Montréal 2019/2016), Akousma (Montréal 2021/2018/2016/2015), and L'Espace du son (Belgium, 2013). His works have been recognized by the JTTP competition (4th place, 2020) and the SOCAN Foundation (2nd Hugh-Le Caine Prize, 2012).

Artistic director of the concert society Codes d'accès from 2017 to 2023, he currently serves on the board of directors of the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC) and Groupe Le Vivier. He is also a student member of the Observatoire interdisciplinaire de création et de recherche en musique (OICRM) and a student representative of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT).
