Chrono Trigger Retro Game Review [05 Oct 2011|01:54am]
Retro review for the beloved computer roleplaying videogame Chrono Trigger (1995) for the SNES / SFC by Square. This version is the Playstation re-release that was part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles (2001) bundle with FF4.Chrono Trigger was created by Square's "Dream Team" division, which was led by Hironobu Sakaguchi (who created the Final Fantasy series). The game was written by scenario writers, Yuji Hori (creator of the Dragon Quest games) and Masato Kato (later directing both Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross; wrote much of Xenogears and XenoSaga I & II), and character designer Akira Toriyama (of Dr. Slump, Dragon Ball and also pretty well known for his Dragon Quest concept art). All of the game's music was composed primarily by Yasunori Mitsuda (later known for his breathtaking music in Xenogears, Crono Cross, and XenoSaga) under the watchful eye of Nobuo Uematsu (the best known Final Fantasy music composer). As a result of this combination of legendary talent, Chrono Trigger is often regarded as one of the best games for the Super Nintendo / Super Famicom.

Chapters of the Chosen Revisited [22 Feb 2009|09:08pm]
[ mood | bitter ] Having played through the first four chapters of Dragon Quest IV for the DS, I've decided to post some of my thoughts on them. I've played all the way through the game on the NES, but there are a few changes for the DS version. I'm going to mention both the changes and my thoughts on the chapters in general. Each chapter brings in at least one new main character, explains how they came to be involved in the central quest, and reveals a little bit more of the world and the overarching plot. They vary in length, but none of the four is very long. The DS version starts out with a brief scene of the main hero, unlike the original, which had you name the hero and then basically forget about it until the fifth chapter.( Read more...Collapse )

Star Ocean 2 glitches? [19 Aug 2006|12:58pm]
I'm playing Star Ocean 2nd story and I'm noticing in certain areas like caves where loading times are often like 5 minutes or sometimes I get a black screen of doom forever. The game isn't scratched, so what could be causing it?

Dragon Quest V [20 Jun 2006|04:34pm]
[ **mood** | cheerful ] Has anyone else played Dragon Quest V? It was never released stateside, but you can play the rom with the English patch if you do not understand Japanese text. I think that this is the best in the series because you get to choose who to marry, and you get to have your own kids on your party.Anyway, I have a tip for everyone who plays any of the games as a rom. You prolly all know this already, but you can make the leveling up process painless by using the fast forward button on ZSNES (I think SNES9X has one too). Just make sure you are in an area that has weaker monsters. And all you have to do is repeatedly hit A and choose attack. Hope this was helpful for someone. Cheers.

Final Fantasy IV for the GBA [16 Dec 2005|08:03pm]
I've only played through one boss and about a half hour of gameplay, but this is CERTAINLY a perfect port of the original cartridge format. If you ever want to ever experience, or re-experience, one of the top three greatest Final Fantasy games of all time, I strongly suggest that you pick this one up.Some are disappointed that it's not on DS, but I really couldn't imagine this game utilizing both screens. It would take away from its old-school taste, really. Quite honestly it makes more sense to have the game on the Micro, that little trendy piece these days.If you "experienced" the Anthology/Chronicle games on the PlayStation, you haven't experienced it at all. The loading times were absolutely horrible (Anthology FAR WORSE) and it took away from that old Nintendo controller feeling.Pick it up today.Save Completed.

Do not offend Lassic [15 Dec 2005|02:18pm]
This morning, I finished with the first Phantasy Star game (the version on the Game Boy Advance, that is). I had to consult a walkthrough for quite a few things, because I suck at video games. Actually, I guess I don't suck THAT badly, because most of the battles that the walkthrough writer said were really hard weren't so much for me. When I'm close to the end of a game, though, I usually don't want to bother trying to find my way through dungeons. I just want to get it over with. I can only imagine how difficult it is for the people who actually write the walkthroughs. I ended up beating the final boss twice, because the Governor of Motavia asks you a yes/no question afterwards, and I wanted to see how he reacted to each response. For the most part, the ending is exactly the same either way. After a brief ending sequence, there are credits. Fish Man wasn't involved with this one, but the writer is identified as "April Fool." I wonder if that's like when they had Simpsons episodes credited to "Penny Wise" and "Pound Foolish."**( The good, the bad, and the ugly of the gameCollapse )**Next it'll be on to Phantasy Star 2, I suppose.

Wakey wakey, community! [27 Nov 2005|09:50pm]
Okay, sounds like it's time for another poll. The question is:**What do you think was the most climactic moment in any classic RPG?**I expect some good answers on this one. I'll start us off in the comments.
