The "Garments without Guilt" campaign, which ensured fair wages and prevented sweatshops and child labour, has reached a pre-COVID earning capacity of 5billionannuallytheindustryisgearedtoachieveitsrevenuegoalofUS5 billion annually the industry is geared to achieve its revenue goal of US5billionannuallytheindustryisgearedtoachieveitsrevenuegoalofUS8 billion per year by 2025. Although the importance of effective leadership has been established as an absolute necessity for the development of an organization, the effects of leaders in other tiers outside the organization have rarely been explored. This study is an attempt to fill this gap in literature using the qualitative case study method to explore the impact of systems leadership (or lack thereof) on the development of the apparel industry in Sri Lanka. The industry has transitioned from its traditional methods of exporting and tailoring garments in the late '70s to the utilization of R&D and innovation to improve designs, production, marketing, logistics, and green garments. Most of the goals have been achieved through systems leadership that addresses a wide range of strategies, such as product and market diversification, improved organizational culture, achieving the highest standards of ethical compliance, and human resource development through a positive and nurturing environment that promotes 'green manufacturing'.

for economic development around the world in recent years, most of the stakeholders
don’t seem to have much of an understanding about the impact sport can have on
achieving sustainable development and humanitarian objectives the world is struggling
to achieve. Considering the critical conditions, the Sri Lankan economy is facing at
the moment, this study would focus on specific remedies Sri Lanka could implement
as part of its recovery efforts. Policy makers will not only have to be concerned about
the return on investments (ROI), but also about the environmental and social impacts
of the programs implemented in the name of economic development. Sri Lanka, being
a country that has been experiencing violent conflicts based on ethnic and perhaps
even religious backgrounds of people, can benefit from sports activities at all different
levels not only to achieve harmony among different ethnic and religious groups but
also to achieve the much-needed economic development of the country. This narrative
overview focuses mainly on the economic development by developing social and human
capital and all other different aspects of the sports industry that can make a significant
contribution to the GDP of the country. Globally, sports are big business, and an integral
part of the culture and lifestyle of the country. The growth not only in the size but also
the complexity and diversity that attract the new ways of thinking about the sports
economy. If we, as a country, are serious in using all the resources we have in improving
our economy then, we should harness the sporting talents to overcome the economic
and social issues while developing appropriate policies to address the problems in the
sports industry.

Having begun as an unskilled labour-intensive mass-production, the apparel industry in Sri Lanka ... more Having begun as an unskilled labour-intensive mass-production, the apparel industry in Sri Lanka transformed itself into one that caters to high-end value chain manufacture in a relatively short time period. During its period of transition since the phasing out of the Multi-Fiber Agreement (MFA), which, de facto, provided a shield against its inherent competitive disadvantage viz-a-viz its competitors, since its inception in the 1970s, demanded extraordinary structural interventions within and outside the industry if the sector to survive. Though the sector's earning capacity is around US$5 billion per year, which is about 0.25% of the world revenue within the apparel sector, the industry is planning to achieve a revenue goal of US$8 billion per year by 2025. According to JAAF (Joint Apparel Association Forum of Sri Lanka), apart from stable policies and labour priorities, improving productivity is the most effective way of achieving these goals. This research explored the influence of Total Factor Productivity (TFP), a widely used economic factor in many similar empirical studies. The analysis of regression coefficients obtained by processing cross-sectional data through a multiple regression Cobb-Douglas production function suggests that higher TFP gains are mostly associated with medium-sized enterprises, the middle class in the sector, compared to small and large-sized organisations. The study envisages that the research findings will provide insights to pursue appropriate state policies that could unravel the true potential of the industry as a growth driver and a broad industry diversification catalyst.

This study explored the influence of noneconomic factors on productivity, competitive and comparative advantages as the influencing factors on the development of the sector. A thematic assessment of nine leading apparel exporters was conducted. The findings reveal that the productivity, competitive and comparative advantages were effectively synergized by focusing on external (non-economic) factors, such as: physical and psychological wellbeing of employees, buyer loyalty, quality of ancillary and supporting services, industry attitude, social responses, ethical supply sourcing, and organizational culture. Further, the success story of the apparel industry began when the journey was turned around from the brink of disintegration and collapse owing to the ingenuity of a few industry leaders who showed courage, innovativeness, and developed strategy to fight back as a collective body. However, there has not been an adequate support from policy establishments. The study envisages that the findings will be helpful for future developments in the apparel industry as well as for designing appropriate policies supporting the industry.

However, the importance of this aspect, was recognized during the 20th Century with the application of science and information technology to the development of new goods and more efficient methods of production in developed countries and later to the developing world. The benefits of having a more educated workforce will affect not only the organization where those individuals happen to work but also the economy of the country, as a whole. channels through which education affects a country's productivity: Firstly, increasing the collective ability of the workforce to carry out existing tasks more efficiently. Secondly, facilitating the transfer of knowledge about new information, products and technologies. Thirdly, increasing creativity to boost a country's capacity to create new knowledge, products and technologies. Equity in education should become the top priority of the policymakers since it empowers the people to help themselves and thus helps to improve governance and to reduce corruption. In summary, all the indirect benefits a society gains having a higher level of knowledge and awareness collectively is as important as the direct impact of education on economic growth.

However, due to various crisis situations such as the Easter Sunday attack, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the current economic crisis, the industry has experienced a decline in performance. This study aims to investigate the impact of crises on the hospitality and tourism industry in the southern province of Sri Lanka, analyse the changes in human resource practises adopted to mitigate the crisis, and explore innovative HR practises to address future crises in the sector. Data was collected through a pre-tested questionnaire survey administered to 40 hotels representing three, four, and five-star categories. Descriptive and non-parametric statistical methods were used for data analysis. The research findings indicate that the recent crisis situations have had a significant impact on various performance indicators of the hospitality and tourism industry, including total bookings, average daily rate, revenue per available room, average length of stay, and occupancy rate. The sector has implemented different managerial strategies in areas such as labour force management, work scheduling, wage and salary plans, and training schedules to mitigate the adverse effects of crises. The study recommends the adoption of crisis preparedness strategies through effective human resource management practises to effectively address challenges during crisis situations in the hospitality and tourism industry.

It is not unreasonable to conclude that the socio-political culture of the country, together with a lack of knowledge about basic economics, among other things, have been instrumental in leading Sri Lanka to its present predicament.
