Since this standard is still in the developmentphase, all of the results presented here are to be seen as preliminary, as is theintroduction to the standard itself. The video encodings analyzed in this report havebeen generated with a preliminary version
Video traces containing the sizes and (PSNR) qualities of the individual fra mes of a video encod... more Video traces containing the sizes and (PSNR) qualities of the individual fra mes of a video encoding are a convenient video representation for the evaluation of video networking mechanisms. These video traces can be used to find the frame loss probabilities of a lossy networking mechanism, but can not give the PSNR video quality after lossy network transport. To date

Our focus is on the link level design issues for IP based multi-hop communication systems using code division multiple access with pseudo-noise spreading sequences. We employ pseudo noise sequences to keep the signalling overhead low. In particular, we report on our initial design

The tool gives the dierences in PSNR quality between two or three YUV video sequences and includes also a player for YUV video streams. In a typical application scenario, the tool is used for the

In the last years - even for wireless local area networks - mechanisms have been found to support both in a cellular network. In multi-hop networks based on IEEE802.11, security and authentication are still open issues. Mainly the

The ViTAN tool takes the location of the wireless terminals (specified by Cartesian coordinates) and the link qualities between the terminals as input. The tool produces a visualization of the graph of

Consequently, the performance evaluation of networking architectures, protocols, and mechanisms for video traffic becomes increasingly important. Video traces, which give the sizes, deadlines, and qualities of the individual video frames in a video

Video encoding for multimedia services over communication networks has significantly advanced in ... more Video encoding for multimedia services over communication networks has significantly advanced in recent years with the development of the highly efficient and flexible H.264/AVC video coding standard and its SVC extension. The emerging H.265/HEVC video coding standard as well as 3D video coding further advance video coding for multimedia communications. This paper first gives an overview of these new video coding standards and then examines their implications for multimedia communications by studying the traffic characteristics of long videos encoded with the new coding standards. We review video coding advances from MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2 to H.264/AVC and its SVC and MVC extensions as well as H.265/HEVC. For single-layer (nonscalable) video, we compare H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC in terms of video traffic and statistical multiplexing characteristics. Our study is the first to examine the H.265/HEVC traffic variability for long videos. We also illustrate the video traffic characteris...
