The implementation of an application to help people with diabetes in choosing a correct diet is used as an example of the emerging complexity of ICT applications in an Ambient Intelligence environment. Suggestions for possible future approaches to the development of Ambient Intelligence environments and complex applications are offered.

In this paper, the problems of interactions with applications implemented in the Android platform, chosen for the experiments of interaction with the developed applications, are discussed with main emphasis on two main aspects: (i) the use of facilities supporting accessibility available in the most commonly used operating systems (mainstreaming) and (ii) the portability of solutions across different platforms.

So, the article is focused on the description of the main elements of the European Union strategy lunched to face the issues of the legal and ethical issues related to IA. Thus, the framework mentioned above will be used to describe a scientific experiment realized in an Institute of the Italian National Research Council (CNR), that is an application requiring the adoption of innovative Artificial Intelligence techniques, where the ethical component to be faced is not limited to the aspect of privacy, but, much more important, to the intelligibility of the reasoning process.

The paper aims to show that: i) the present state of technology already offers the possibility of implementing useful and usable support applications; ii) however its usefulness could be enhanced, increasing impact on all people, with particular reference to people who have some limitations of activities (e.g. older people), if deployed in a carefully planned way; iii) a way off from present limitations may be an artificial intelligence control of the environment itself and of the services made available in it. It is also shown that accessibility is a fundamental prerequisite, but the real problems are the usefulness and usability of available environments and applications. The discussion will be made with reference to an implemented experimental application to support feeding. Its interesting features and remaining limitations are used to support the above statements.

In principle, it is supposed to allow the knowledge of the emotional condition of people (through an identification of their feelings) as an input aimed to help computer systems in deciding what information is convenient to provide people as a support to their present activities and to choose the most appropriate interface with the environment. This approach may present remarkable advantages in several application fields, such as e.g. independent living, e-learning, marketing or security. The aim of this contribution is to identify the present technical feasibility of this approach, meant to assess, describe and take care of the general psychological status of people, in connection with the new concepts of health and well-being. In order to test the possible impact of the approach, the integration of available technology and concepts about well-being in a support sy...

The coordination action ‘DfA@eInclusion’ contributes towards e-Inclusion through fostering Design for All. It extends and enhances previous efforts targeted to the creation of a sound theoretical framework for universal design of ICT.

Since a very dangerous element for this condition is represented by the worsening of and decrease in the network of human relationships, a service able to provide suggestions to the users in a specific context, a condominium, is here presented. The innovative idea is a study of an automatic tool that is able to make a decision as to the best suggestion for a specific user, depending on what both she and other people are doing. The service is not at a personal level, but at the level of a network of people: this implies a different approach also for the adaptation, because different adaptations must necessarily work together. A preliminary interface for tablet is available.

Research paper thumbnail of Intelligent environments for all: a path towards technology-enhanced human well-being

Universal Access in the Information Society, 2021

In this context, accessibility and usability, although necessary, are not sufficient to ensure that applications and services are appropriately designed to satisfy human needs and overcome potential functional limitations in the execution of everyday activities fundamental for well-being. This position paper puts forward the claim that, in order to achieve the above objective, it is necessary that: (i) the design of Assistive Intelligent Environments is centered around the well-being of people, roughly intended as the possibility of executing the (everyday) human activities necessary for living (independently), thus ...
