Leveled rectangular earthworks revealed by aerial photographs near the ancient site of Histria have recently been attributed to a Roman legionary marching camp. The lack of rounded corners and of well-configured gates, the course of a river that cuts the rampart, as well as the inappropriate relief lead the Author to refute the Roman character of the work and to consider it as a modern pastoral enclosure.

Aerial photographs and general topography: palaeo-environment, urban configurations, harbor installations, tumular necropolis, roads to the chôra (7th Century BC – 7th Century AD)
Systematically excavated since 1914, Histria has been also periodically photographed since 1929 from the air and constitutes in classical European archeology a significant, although little known, example of the use of aerial surveys. After his first discoveries obtained by this method in the reconstitution of the successive stages of the organization of the urban space, the Author was able to develop as head of the Archaeological Research Department of the National Museum of History in Bucharest (1978 – 1987) a dynamic program, comprising several vertical missions at low altitude and the realization of photogrammetric mapping over a large area around the fortified center. Presented now for the first time, the results of these researches bring some important advances. They concern first of all the reconstitution of the ancient natural environment, strongly modified thereafter, where the tracks of some fifteen roads converging towards the city are identified and accurately fixed on the map. Aerial photographs specify also the location of almost 6000 tumuli erected during nearly a millennium outside the walls, some of which are remarkable for their size (more than 100 m in diameter). It appears that early on, the necropolis was surrounded by a mighty vallum and a ditch - an advanced protection of the city itself apparently used by two other Milesian colonies in the region (Orgamè and Olbia). The relief retains the contours of a circular inner harbor (cothon) and its outer harbor opens to the south, silted after the abandonment of the city, while east of the acropolis the aerial images show the outline of a powerful submerged structure, most likely the jetty of another port. The analysis of the orientations of a certain number of structures of the acropolis area offers the indices of an orthogonal urban plan from the older phases, extended towards the west at the time of the Early Roman wall. All these achievements and the precisions of the cartography allow a critical analysis and a better understanding of the data provided by a century of archaeological excavations and enable to better distinguish the many configurations of the urban space and of its periphery throughout the long history of the city.

Mazois was about to complete an important publication on the monuments of Poseidonia-Paestum at the time of his premature death in 1826. The present study analyses the 106 documents attached to this project, preserved in the Cabinet des Estampes – Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, and remained unpublished until today. In addition to the nine pages of text, these are drawings of the various stages of his architectural surveys, from the sketches on the spot, with measurements and annotations, to the final plates for the in folio volume. The most important part, which is reserved for the two archaic temples (of Hera and Athena) and the temple of Classic period ("Great Temple", "of Poseidon"), exceeds in precision, in details and in quality of graphic expression the surveys made at the same time by Delagardette (1798/1799), Wilkins (1807) or Labrouste (1828). The work of Mazois is thus revealed as a significant, unfortunately unknown, chapter in the history of research on Doric architecture. Mazois' surveys are also valuable for recording the state of the site and some monuments before the destructions and modern overlays, including the general topography of the town walls and the external environment, the inner part of the East Gate and the two bridges in front of the North Gate, several streets, the location of the peribolos east of the southern sanctuary and its entrance, a small temple dismantled thereafter, the amphitheater, an aqueduct, as well as the drawing of an inscription today lost. All the data delivered by the Mazois archives are confronted with the achievements of the research carried out between 1991-2006 by the Author in Poseidonia-Paestum.
