This corpus of about sixty different marks offers an insight into their formal typology (the cross, its support, and letters of the alphabet are the main recurring graphical elements), but also their evolution, and even in one exceptional case the similar graphical features of a merchant’s mark and another identification device, his signature. A series of letters, linked to the accounts and requesting exemption from the toll rights, sheds further light on the wide range of practical uses of the merchants’ marks.

The edition, with the collation of twenty-seven manuscripts, provides an opportunity to explore a rich and little-known tradition. In this sermon Gilbert uses the character of saint Anthony as a pretext for elaborating on topics like prudentia and sapientia. He indulges his inclination for mysticism, insisting on the primacy of contemplation and divine illumination. Some clues in the text would suggest that it was written for - and maybe even preached to - a learned audience, probably franciscan. The sermon is definitely " modern " in the typical fashion favoured by Gilbert, combining a powerfully built structure with a parsimonious use of exempla. Finally, the study shows how the text of the sermon has been reused in the Speculum Morale by Vital du Four, an illustration of the intense circulation of the materia predicabilis.

Medieval Sermon Studies, 56, p. 9-29, 2012

The sermon, which is part of the famous ad status series by Gilbert (In synodis, 3 -- RLS 192), has been incorporated without reference to Gilbert into the Vita Braulionis (BHL 4810) and is presented by the hagiographer as a sermon given by Saint Braulion himself, offering an interesting example of circulation of the materia praedicabilis not only between sermons but also between genres. The discovery of this reuse sheds new light on the Vita Braulionis: it sets a new terminus post quem for the Vita and might be a clue to a mendicant milieu. Regarding the borrowed sermon, the evidence concerning the dating of the Vita seems a bit too conjectural to set the terminus ante quem of the ad status collection definitely, even if a pre-1272 hypothesis ties in well with the main literary activity of Gilbert. An edition of the sermon In synodis, 3 -- RLS 192 is provided from eleven manuscripts of the ad status collection.

An analysis of the survey results provides insights into the practices, problems, and limitations of the community utilizing the TEI for manuscript encoding. The results demonstrate the existence of a steep learning curve for the TEI, where many practitioners are self-taught and where learning-by-doing dominates; there exists a long gap between the first encounter with the TEI and its actual use in projects. Survey results highlight the need for user-friendly, bespoke tools facilitating the processing, analysis, and publishing of TEI-encoded texts. Feedback on the Guidelines themselves reveals aspects that do not fully meet the needs of those encoding manuscript material. To better address these needs, a strengthening of the Special Interest Groups is proposed.
