I started writing about cohousing on my journal this morning, and I got to thinking, "Hmm, I wonder if there's a cohousing group on LJ." Of course there is. If I wanted to meet fellow nail-biters, I'm sure there's a community for that, too. So, enough said about that, an intro. My name is Chris. I'm 32. I'm interested in getting off the grid and eventually moving to a more rural community setting. I am thinking, however, that moving to an urban cohousing project would be a good start, as I'm sure there are several benefits to this process. I believe I'd learn more about what skills I'll need in the rural setting, though not all (agriculture and the like, obviously), and that I'll benefit from living with like-minded community members instead of sticking to the current grind. Some of my false beliefs about cohousing to this point was that the rural setting was the only way to go, as self-sustaining methods tend to focus around growing one's own food, supplying one's own power, and making one's own clothes, and that I thought you'd need a farm to do this. Obviously, this isn't true. Another false belief I had was that I'd need to have saved enough money to buy land flat out and build on it within a few years, if ever I wanted to start a community living project. Obviously, I hadn't thought about joining someone else's project. Some questions: What is the normal opening investment for people looking to get into these situations? (I know it varies, but what have people heard about or paid themselves?) What are the typical thoughts about being able to maintain your "outside" job while transitioning into cohousing? I'm currently a well-paid project manager with several financial debts still being worked off, so I can't exactly ditch the day job and knit hammocks. I'm looking forward to joining the discussion.--Chris...Mood: Inquisitive | | | | | | |
