Workday at Shirley's House [Jun. 16th, 2004|09:53 pm]Coastlands Church
Here are some photos of our recent church workday at Shirley's house. Shirley is an elderly woman who lives just a few blocks from Pacific Beach Middle School. We have been helping her with yardwork. As you can see, we still have a lot of work to do. But we have made a lot of progress compared to when we first began. Thank you Angela for taking the pictures.( workday photosCollapse )

The Purpose of Church [May. 22nd, 2004|04:57 pm]Coastlands Church
Hi all,Sometime ago, while discussing the Doug Pagitt book, we posed the question "What is the purpose of church". As we consider what we should do to make church "better", I truly believe we need to first isolate what exactly "it" is we are trying to do better. What is the goal of this thing we call church? Easier said than done!! After much discussion with many people, it has become evident to me that church "is" (and should be) many things. I posed this question to the Tuesday evening Bible study I lead. I wanted to share with you what I heard. Below are the raw, one or two word answers people offered when asked "What is the purpose of church?". In parenthesis is the number of times mentioned. We had approx. 8-9 Coastlanders in attendance. These are in no particular order, just the order they were in which they were voiced;WORSHIP (4)GOSPEL MESSAGE (3)FELLOWSHIP (3)TEACHING/LEARNING (5)EQUIPPING (2)MODELING CHRISTIANITY (1)GROUP PRAYER (2)TIME DEDICATED TO GOD (2)COMMUNION (2)STRENGTHENING THE BODY (1)MATURING CHRISTIANS (1)What are YOUR thoughts on these answers or what would YOU add to this list??? I would really like to hear your ideas. As we plot a course for this thing we called Coastlands Church, it is essential that we have a shared, comprehensive idea of who we are and what we are hoping to accomplish. I invite you all to share your thoughts, feelings and dreams for our church!!In Christ,Jeff

Servanthood in action [May. 17th, 2004|11:59 pm]Coastlands Church
Yesterday in church, Bobby and Kimberly Herron came to speak about their inner city ministry in Los Angeles. Bobby and Pastor Evan are old friends that played volleyball with a Christian ministry called Athletes in Action.Bobby and Kimberly are now addressing the needs of the impoverished living in Los Angeles county. They admitted that it can be an overwhelming task. Jenna Pabalate and Cari Senefsky talked to the Herrons after church about the idea of group of people from Coastlands Church helping out one day in L.A. Bobby was excited to hear that. I hope that we can do this... maybe next month. Also on Sunday, Paul Williams rededicated his life to God. As he put it, living 70% for God is not enough. Paul is doing what God really asks of all of us. thoughts?

Tuesday Night Bible Study [May. 11th, 2004|02:09 pm]Coastlands Church
Hi Gang! It's exciting to see some new "faces" on our "Livejournal"! Welcome to all the newbies (like I'm some veteran!).TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY NEWS: Kinda late notice, but to all of you who are not currently attending the Tuesday Bible Study, you are invited to our Social Fiesta tonight (Tues. 5/11) at 6:30 - 7:00pm at our house (4862 Mt. St. Helens Dr - 858-278-6671. Were going to grill up some Carne Asada & some tasty Adobada. We look forward to a mellow time of just hanging out, sharing some food and some laughs. Come if you can.We just completed a 6-8 week study on the "Essentials" of our faith. We finished our study of the Old Testament narrative 1 Samuel just about the time the movie "The passion" was being released. As a group, we decided to take a short break from our scripture study (before diving into 2 Samuel), and review some of the core tenants of our faith. We were anticipating more discussing about Christianity with our friends, family, co-workers etc... (due to the movie) and wanted to be prepared "to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect," 1 Peter 3:15It was a great study and we all learned much. We actually produced a "Statement of Beliefs" from the scripture we discussed and the notes we compiled. It is really cool to see what a group of believers can learn and do, when we come together in enthusiastic discussion and study! If anyone would like a copy of what we came up with, please contact me.NEW STUDY: We will begin our study of the book of 2 Samuel next Tuesday, May 18th. This will be an informative, exciting and fun group study of the account of the lives of King David and his son King Solomon! If anyone has interest in getting on board for this study, please feel free to contact me.Sorry for the long post! Just a lot of info to get out.Adios!Jeff

I did it! [May. 10th, 2004|09:25 pm]Coastlands Church
I actually logged on and tried to post my first entry about 45 minutes ago but then I leaned on something on the keyboard for too long and the thing would'nt let m e type anymore. Thank God for my wife/computer genius. If not for her, I'd probably have to buy a new computer tomorrow. Well we can let people know that if I can log on to "livejournal" then anyone can. Hey- 3 questions 1. Did Adam and Eve have belly buttons? 2. Does a woman really have one more rib than a man? 3. Can people watch how slow I type on this thing? Please respond and I'll try to find my way back here but I think I already forgot my username and password.Next time I'll have something much more intelligent to add to the community.Jesus Saves,D.K.

Website Update [May. 8th, 2004|11:39 am]Coastlands Church
On Friday, Paul Mossbarger walked Evan through the process of switching web hosts. The Coastlands Church website will now be hosted by Crystaltech. The transfer should take effect on Sunday. On Sunday we should be able to access the website again. Granted, it will be a back-up version of the website from two years ago so all current news and info will need to be re-updated. Special thanks go to Paul Mossbarger for helping out so much in restoring the website. He was the one who originally designed the website for free (I think that was back in 1997). Even though Paul now resides in Washington, he remains a valuable member of the Coastlands Church community. Thank you Paul!Added thanks go to Katja Heikkinen-Rael for her help as well. She was the website maintainer before I took over.

I made it.. [May. 6th, 2004|10:06 pm]Coastlands Church
With much prodding from Jeff, I made it on here(live-journal) and setup an account. Hopefully I'll be able to monitor the forum here and keep up to date with what everyone is doing.I'm more than willing to contribute what little tech. knowledge I have to helping get the www site back up. If that's needed, pls let me know. I don't do web design directly but I am in the web hosting industry so I can help out a bit as far as the networking goes... I'll be the first to admit, I'm not very good at all at creating content. I'm really interested in the new re-imaging book, mostly because of the topics I'm hearing discussed in the church as a result. I'm not sure that we need to implement much of what's going on in the book, because I think our church is already very progressive and has already dealt with many of the issues brought up in the book.I'm very stoked on the whole idea of getting a permanent location for our church to meet. This is something that I think will take lots of planning and forethought in order to succeed on. It will also solve many problems and allow several programs to bloom that have been floundering for lack of a stable place to meet.Well, that's enuf for my first post,Eric Watkins

Hi Everyone! [May. 5th, 2004|10:14 am]Coastlands Church
I tried to post earlier and I don't know if it worked...so there may be two from me.First I would like to say how excited I am for my friends Liz & Fernando + Dan & Wendy, who are each getting married. I can't think of any other four people who deserve Love and Happiness!Did anyone get a chance to watch the PBS special Frontline "The Jesus Factor: A President and His Faith"I was not able to watch it, but I heard the discussion about it on NPR...you can also check out the website @ http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jesus/talk/Just reading the reactions on the website is extremely interesting. So many people watched the show and had comments on the website going from one extreme to the other. Some people are happy Bush is a Christian and feel as though it is comforting. Some people are extremely fearful and think Bush feels he is "on a Mission from God" For me personally I am torn. I find comfort in knowing my President is a strong Christian, but I wish he cared a little more about Environmental Issues. Well I understand he is busy dealing with other issues right now. I wish more Christians in general were concerned about water conservation and recycling, etc (the list goes on and on). Is anyone interested in volunteering for a PB beach cleanup with the Surfrider Foundation? I don't mind organizing it. Any thoughts?See you all soon.Angela Rieke
