Research paper thumbnail of Co-Parenting: A Review of the Literature

This review examines co-parenting, the more or less equal sharing of parenting responsibilities b... more This review examines co-parenting, the more or less equal sharing of parenting responsibilities by mothers and fathers. Because co-parenting remains an anomaly, much of the review addresses men's levels and forms of parenting involvement. Also investigated are the factors contributing to their participation and nonparticipation. Noting that parental participation occurs primarily in three family arrangements-married or cohabiting fathers in intact families; separated or divorced fathers; and unwed young fathers-the review is organized by family type. The review notes that men's parenting participation varies both within and across family structural arrangements. For the most part, mothers continue to be the primary child-rearers and caretakers; while some men are more involved in parenting than were their own fathers or many of their peers, relatively little change has occurred overall. Another significant finding is that father involvement in each type of family arrangement is closely intertwined with fathers' relationship with the mothers of their children. Both institutional and personal factors contribute to men's limited parenting involvement. Research indicates that both children and fathers benefit from increased paternal involvement in parenting. The study of fathering, and, more specifically, co-parenting is multidisciplinary. (Contains 313 references.

I agree with Giraldo who says, The American family today is a thriving institution although it has changed from the era of our grandparents. At a time when the public schools are moving away from their traditional role as socializers, when elected officials are no longer looked on as models of behavior, and when the churches are retreating from an admonitory role over the personal lives of the general population, the family continues as one of the most persistent, if not the strongest, molding and modeling institutions in society. It is still the primary residential unit, basic consumer, means for reproduction and socialization, major support system and primary social-psychological network available to adults and children [5, p. xvii].

Gender and minority status are key in explaining differences among the aged in terms of economic ... more Gender and minority status are key in explaining differences among the aged in terms of economic and health issues that they confront. Significantly, the situation of older women is not a result of old age, but is a result of lifelong patterns of socioeconomic and gender stratification in the larger society. The social origins of older women's disadvantaged status are not mysterious; they reside in the institutions and structures of the family (the informal sector), the labor market, and social policy (both parts of the formal sector). Each of these areas has received independent study; however, the consequences for older women flow from the complex and often subtle interrelationships among and across these social institutions (Estes, Gerard, and Clark 1984). Women's family roles, including caregiving activities, directly affect their economic status. Not only does economic status directly affect access to health care, but also economic status is associated with health status. Because of the complexity of these institutional interrelationships which adversely affect women, the resolution of the economic and health issues facing older women cannot be achieved by providing services alone. Certainly a more comprehensive and integrated health and social service delivery system is needed not only by older females, but also by all individuals being asked to provide caregiving in the growing number of three-and four-generational families. Access, availability, and financing of services remain vitally important. However, the analytical framework proposed here acknowledges the link between income and health needs in a life-course perspective, delicately balancing health and well-being. For women, this raises the need for broad-based solutions that address sex, race, and age discrimination in the labor market, unequal pay for jobs of comparable
