Almost 90 years before the 2025 live-action remake was causing controversy across the world, the original Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was changing the entire film industry for the better. Walt Disney’s most pivotal triumph, the movie follows the titular Snow White (Adriana Caselotti) as she is rescued from exile by a team of dwarfs only for an Evil Queen (Lucille La Verne) to hunt her down. A toe-tapping, visual extravaganza, Snow White might be closing in on 100 years old, but let that take nothing away from just how impressive this feat of animation truly is. An investigative documentary film, Sugarcane was directed by Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, with Kassie also co-producing the doc with Kellen Quinn. The film explores the dark history of the Canadian Indian residential school system, which was designed to isolate Indigenous children from their families and forcibly assimilate them into Euro-Canadian culture. The system, which lasted over a hundred years, has been acknowledged as cultural genocide, and its effects are still felt in Canadian society to this day.
Sugarcane had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim and won the Grand Jury Award for Directing. The film went on to win numerous other accolades as well, including an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature and the National Board of Review’s Best Documentary award. A powerful film that investigates one of the worst acts of widespread cruelty in Canadian history, Sugarcane is a compelling and clear-eyed piece of journalism that’s also a tribute to the resilience and perseverance of the Indigenous communities targeted by this act of genocide.

The film follows thePelletier family as they head on a globetrotting trip to savor the very best views our stunning planet has to offer. However, the clan of six is sadly on a time limit, with three of their four children soon set to lose their vision to retinitis pigmentosa. After premiering at the 51st Telluride Festival to great acclaim, Blink made the move to Disney+ and only increased its praise. Equal parts heartwarming and breaking, Blink is a reminder to hold close whatever and whoever we consider precious and that life’s beauty is worth the toughest challenges. - Jake Hodges

Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus is set in the year 2142 and follows a team of budding young space colonists who, after searching a derelict space station, find themselves on the receiving end of unimaginable horrors. No, Romulus is not to the standard of the first two outings in the franchise, but with the bar extremely high, there’s still plenty to love with this installment. Packed full of tension and enough lore to feel both enticing to franchise fans and stand-alone enough for new viewers to feel welcome, Romulus is a neat addition to the Alien story. - Jake Hodges
