'I Saw the TV Glow' Review: You'll Be Talking About This A24 Horror Film All Year
Jane Schoenbrun's follow-up to 'We're All Going to the World's Fair' is an ambitious and compelling feature that is made to be dissected.
From Jane Schoenbrun, the award-winning filmmaker behind We're All Going to the World's Fair, comes the coming-of-age psychological horror film I Saw the TV Glow. Justice Smith (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) and Brigette Lundy-Paine (Bill & Ted Face the Music) star as Owen and Maddy, two reclusive teenagers with similar backgrounds who bond over a supernatural YA series called "The Pink Opaque." When the series is suddenly and mysteriously canceled after five seasons, the two teens begin questioning their own identities and their respective worldviews. Serving as an allegory for the trans experience, I Saw the TV Glow has become one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2024.
In his review for I Saw the TV Glow, Collider's Ross Bonaime wrote:
With I Saw the TV Glow, Schoenbrun hasn’t made a coming-of-age story. They’ve made a coming-apart story. It's a film that demands to be picked apart and explored. It's inventive and unconventional in a manner that will perplex and compel in equal measure.
The movie also stars Ian Foreman (Let the Right One In), Helena Howard (The Wilds), Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, and Danielle Deadwyler (Till).

'Ultraman: Rising'
Available: Friday, June 14
Netflix Animation, the studio behind Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Leo, and Klaus, returns with the animated superhero origin story Ultraman: Rising. Based on the iconic Japanese character created by Tsuburaya Productions, the movie follows Ken Sato, a talented but self-absorbed baseball player who lives a double life as Japan's biggest hero, Ultraman. After defeating an angry kaiju, Ken soon learns that his fallen adversary has left behind a baby, and now he feels obligated to take the monster infant under his wing.
Collider's Chase Hutchinson was a bit more lukewarm about the movie, writing in his review:
It’s a fascinating push and pull as the frequently ambitious animation style represents the type of breathtaking, big-swing approach worth championing, just as the story consistently falls short. This is what ultimately separates Ultraman: Rising from something like the spectacular Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. You're just always waiting for it to take that extra leap. Even as this Netflix movie certainly looks the part, it’s never quite able to swing as high.
Industrial Light & Magic provided the animation for the movie, which features the voices of Christopher Sean (You), Gedde Watanabe (Blue Eye Samurai), Tamlyn Tomita (Cobra Kai), Keone Young (Crank), and Julia Harriman.

'Monkey Man'

'Monkey Man' Review: Dev Patel Kicks Ass in Chaotic Action Thrill Ride
Released in collaboration with Jordan Peele, Patel's directorial debut has great action and a so-so story.
Academy Award nominee Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) makes his directorial debut in the R-rated action-revenge thriller Monkey Man. Patel stars as Kid, orphaned as a child, he now spends his days making money from an underground fight club whilst wearing a gorilla mask. For years, he has been plotting his revenge against the corrupt government leaders responsible for his mother's death, and he has finally found his way to get close to his city's wealthy and nefarious elite, leading him to become a vigilante for the poor and powerless.
Collider's Perri Nemiroff had a mixed-to-positive response to Dev Patel's debut movie, writing in her review:
The action is staggeringly impressive, both from a visual and storytelling standpoint, but the material in between runs the risk of deflating the experience via pacing problems and narrative confusion. Why teeter positive on Monkey Man then? Because it’s abundantly clear it was crafted by a passionate and determined artist with a vision.
Academy Award winner Jordan Peele (Get Out) produced the movie, which also stars Sharlto Copley (District 9), Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm), Vipin Sharma (Hotel Mumbai), Sikandar Kher (Sense8), Sobhita Dhulipala (The Night Manager), Ashwini Kaleskar (Ek Tha Hero), and Makarand Deshpande (RRR).

'Origin' Review: Ava DuVernay’s Unusual Adaptation Rights Itself in the End
Starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, 'Origin' is an odd adaptation that takes too long to make its concept work.
Academy Award nominee Ava DuVernay, the celebrated filmmaker behind Selma, When They See Us, and 13th directs the powerful drama Origin. Inspired by the nonfiction book Castle: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson, the film serves as a dramatized version of how Wilkerson, in the wake of a personal tragedy, traveled around the globe while creating the thesis of her book and researching the caste systems of various countries.
Collider's Ross Bonaime was mixed on the movie overall, writing in his review:
DuVernay took a big swing with Origin, and that’s certainly to be commended, but the film sadly doesn’t work more often than it does. The impact of the end makes the journey worthwhile, but it’s a rocky road to that conclusion.
Academy Award nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (King Richard) stars as Wilkerson alongside a cast that also includes Jon Bernthal (The Punisher), Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Audra McDonald (Beauty and the Beast), Niecy Nash-Betts (Monster), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), and Blair Underwood (Deep Impact).
