IN this article, however, Victoria Cass argues that the novel is, in fact, carefully structured around the image of the Lantern Festival. The nighttime holiday occurs multiple times in the novel and conveys the larger narrative of anti-structure, disorder, and release. Each appearance of the holiday encodes a logical progression, marking important changes in the text, inserting overall structure and meaning to the novel. Cass bases her characterization on the use of the holiday in the novel, as well as on the characterization of the Lantern Festival in Ming journals, poetry and private historiography.
