Alte

English: The village of Alte is also a freguesia (civil parish) within the municipality of Loulé, in the Faro district in Algarve Portugal. In the 2011 census the population of the parish was recorded as 1,997. The village lies inland north of the city of Albufeira and is a popular tourist destination due to its typical Algarvian narrow cobbled streets with whitewashed houses and array of Algarvian chimneys. At the centre of the village is the parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption located on Largo da Igreja. At the north eastern end of the village are the springs (fontes) and Alte river for which Alte is well known. Here there is a bridge across the river at the beginning of a series of waterfalls as the water flows down the hillside of the Serra do Caldeirão. There is a paved garden area on the banks of the river dedicated to Alte's famous poet, Cândido Guerreiro. In the garden there are tiled plaques on the wall with some of the poet's works inscribed on them.
