About Me and My Addictions

My name is Andreas Weith. I have a PhD in Biology; however, meanwhile I am retired from all my scientific positions. I am addicted to photography, especially to landscapes and wildlife. Since I reside in Southern Germany, my preferred areas for photography are the many protected sites around Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria. I do, however, love to travel and to visit the most remote nature reserves that I can get access to ( and that I can afford visiting by means of financing ...).

My favorite part of this world to take photographs by no means is the arctic. I am no doubt infected by the arctic virus. When I was young and already knew that nature is my favorite topic to deal with in my life, I always had five goals to reach in my lifetime: i) Galapagos, as this is the most exciting place to see endemic species and to be faced with Darwin's evolution theory; ii) the Great Barrier Reef as this is the biggest and most colourful reef on earth; iv) the south american rainforest with all its amazing animal species and all the plants making up the green lungs of this world; and finally v) the arctic, though I did not really know why at the time when I made up my goals. I heard about the biggest land living carnivor reisiding in the eternal ice but was indecisive whether that's really worth sustaining the cold. However; as I grew old, none of the goals could be reached owing to limited time, money, opportunities and else. I was over 60 to achieve goal no. v)! And since I was on Svalbard since then; stepped on a little icebreaker and drove around that archipelago and far north of it; I just can't resist using every chance to go north. I'll try ever again to see the only region of this earth where man's influence is not really obvious and where nature still rules over everything else...

My Camera Equipment

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Canon EF 16-35mm 1:4 L IS USM, Canon EF Macro 100mm 1:2.8 L IS USM, Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 A022, Tamron Converter TX-C14, Kenko Converter C-AF 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300. Canon Speedlite 420 EX, Yongnuo Speedlite YN568 EX II, Various grey filters and gradual filters plus a reliable tripod and a monopod.

When preparing images for publication I usually use "Lightroom" version 6. I normally try to apply as little changes to the original RAW files as possible (I always take photos as RAWs). My preferred format is 16:9 as I designate it most comparable to my own visual field.

A Few of the Things I Am Proud of at Commons

My contributions to WLE 2016 Germany scored no.7 and no. 16, respectively.

WLE 2017

My little common tern that was lucky to catch a common rudd won the German WLE contest in 2017! The peeking tern scored 23rd.
