esteltinuviel post kind of kicked my butt in gear as I joined and never introduced myself; don't want to see a community like this come to a stand still!
So, hi all! I was over the moon when I found this community as I was very, very sick of being barraged with anti-Arwen sentiment. I love the character both in the books and on the screen and think they couldn't have picked a more beautiful or talented actress as Liv (I might be somewhat in the minority there, but when Bertolucci's making films specifically for you, yeah, you pretty much rock, IMO ;-))
I have... complicated ideas about movie!Arwen: While I'm so glad that she's so prominent, I think Jackson backs off too easily and she's soon in the more typical romantically conflicted role, acquiescing to Elrond (throuhgh admittedly beautiful and power scenes!) and being a dutiful princess. Did I want to see her in Helm's Deep? Answer is simply: dunno. Wouldn't have made a difference to me if that's the route he wanted to go, I just feel that having so much of the route he did decide to go down either cut back (where's our library scene in Return of the King, hmmm? Not even on the EE!) or too traditional (leaving Aragorn for the grey Havens? Rubbish!) hurts what is a really strong character and performance (I'm sure much of you have many varying views about this; this is just my own :-))
Has anyone read The Unsung Heroes of Lord of the Rings by Lynette Porter? Fantastic book, though sometimes her knowledge of Tolkien is a little off and she kind of bends over backwards to support the movies, she is keen in pointing out caertain faults and changes for the better or worse with a shrewd eye!
So, anyways, all of this was just to say howdy! So, howdy! :-D
Peace, Ghani
