Well, hardly anyone said anything about April's book. Let's hope May is better. For May the book choices are Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick or The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.

Dear members, I am new to your community and just wanted to comment on the last post. It just so happens that I have recently read THE HANDMAIDEN'S TALE. In many of her books Atwood centers her stories around these ideas of religion and feminism. I believe this is due to her early life growing up in a time of suppression of women. In her book CATS EYE the same is true. She relates the story of a young girl trying to come to terms with her family's lifestyle, which is alternative from the idea of the nuclear family. In THE HANDMAIDEN'S TALE Atwood relates the idea of women being reverted to nothing more than property is a fear that women have because it wasn't so long ago that we were considered property.

For those of you finished with The Handmaid's Tale, what do you think Atwood's main 'point' was in writing the novel? Do you think there was a reason the novel was so centered around ideas relating to feminism and religion? Also, what do you think of the 'Historical Notes' at the end of the novel?( Personally...Collapse )

First off, you're all welcome to start making posts pertaining to The Handmaid's Tale, whether you've finished it or not. Secondly, if you have suggestions on what to read for next month, reply to this post with your ideas. Suggest as many books as you'd like, of any genre. Welcome to LiveJournal Book Club. The book selected for April, 2005 is The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. Feel free to join the community and post your thoughts on this book at any time.
