imho Violence is not an option. Actually, I think any violence is similar to alcohol - it doesn't make a solution to your problems, just helps to run away from them for a short amount of time - bu then it all starts again.For exemple, let's say an american guy hates canadians. So what if he'd get beaten by couple of fellows in the centre of Toronto? Will it change his opinion about canadians? Not at all. In fact, he'd be just hating canadians more, then he was and'll seek a way to have a revenge or something. So that's not the one who can beat shit out of his enemies is the strongest, but the one who can turn his enemies being his friends. (Comment on this) |

Uganda's Calling!  Sorry if this is not allowed in the community, I can remove it if asked - but I thought some of you might be interested in this new group! I'm a board member of  ugandacalling, and we exist to raise awareness of and work for the end of the civil war in Northern Uganda, which has victimized many innocent civilians, particularly children, and left many homeless and desperately poor. We're trying to provide resources for local groups working on this issue - collecting petitions for groups to circulate, providing ideas for fundraisers for worthy projects, posting news articles and bulletins about Uganda, and letting activists and interested people get together to learn more and network with each other. And we still need lots of people to help us carry on all these functions and get us off the ground as a nonprofit - as well as community leaders who'd like to start something for Uganda! American Legion Declares War on Peace Movement I got this article here.The organization the American Legion has voted at its nationalconvention to target peace activists and the antiwar movement. Thegroup boasts nearly 3 million members. The group's national commandercalled for an end to all "public protests" and what he called "mediaevents" against the war, even though they are protected by the Bill ofRights. Thomas Cadmus told the convention "The American Legion willstand against anyone and any group that would demoralize our troops,or worse, endanger their lives by encouraging terrorists to continuetheir cowardly attacks against freedom-loving peoples. The delegatesvoted to use "whatever means necessary" to "ensurethe united backing of the American people to support our troops andthe global war on terrorism." Progressive Coalition Okay, I'm sorry to sink this low, but I need to get this out there. I started a community called the Progressive Coalition, or progressive_net. I'm trying to get all progressives together to talk about all kinds of things, including pacifism, socialism, anarchism, environmentalism, other isms, as well. And I would love to eventually set up a coalition of progressive organizations, so the more members, the better! Everyone PLEASE HELP ME get other organizations to cooperate with this movement--unfortunately, there are even quite progressive, leftist people who consider the RCP a "lunatic fringe" group, and therefore won't help when we need them to. Hello, all. I'm Libby and I'm 17 years old and going to college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute next fall. Lately I've been exploring different sets of values and one of the things I keep coming back to is pacifism. I've realized that throughout my life I've shown a great deal of distaste for violence. Why is it that Congress will step in to "save" the life of Terri Schiavo, who seems to have made it clear that she would not want to be artificially kept alive, and at the same time support the military actions in Iraq and other foreign nations? Editorial Piece I Wrote I wrote this over a year ago, which was printed in Binghamton, NYs "Press & Sun Builletin" on January 6, 2004. Just figured you all might be interested:Months ago, President Bush announced victory in Iraq. Yet our own violence has spawned hatred against us, death of our soldiers, and our own carelessness has led to innocent deaths of civilians. Although there were no weapons of mass destruction, I strongly believe that the people of Iraq needed to be liberated. But the question that comes to mind is: Should we have used violence? I do not believe so.Being a pacifist, some may believe that I feel the best course of action is inaction. Thus is far from the truth. To be a pacifist, one must be completely active... but it is through actions of love, not actions of hate, that change should be made. We drop our swords and give ourselves over to love if we truly want world peace. It is the basic concept that we should not only have fought the Iraqi government nonviolently to tear down a dictatorship, but also to tear down the hatred in their hearts. When that is accomplished, then we have reached true victory.It is commonly argued, "But Iraq was much more brutal than places such as India, it would never work in Iraq." Yet, nine different brutal totalitarian nations in South America freed themselves from their brutish governments using nonviolence, including the people of Chile whom suffered under Augusto Pinochet, one of the most brutal dictators in history. Even the Nazis could not control the nonviolent resistance in Norway until the activists turned violent.Sometimes it seems illogical, or impractical, but when kept nonviolent every single organized large-scale peaceful revolution has worked. Success is difficult, but when organized well, it has not failed in even the most atrocious regimes.What should we have done then? I believe we should have assembled a Nonviolent Army, one which would aide the Iraqi people in civil disobedience in a movement for peace. With millions upon millions worldwide aiding this, Iraq simply would have lost control. When a human injures another human that consistently shows love and forgiveness, in 99 out of 100 times, the aggressors hatred decreases and respect increases. When people continuously refuse to comply, even to the death, then you can not achieve their obedience. Through nonviolent, non-cooperation with evil, that evil simply cannot control you if you persist, as it is impossible for governments to function without the general obedience of the people. I believe it could have, and would have worked against the Iraqi government, if attempted with international support.Iraq is not the only government we should have gone after nonviolently. By sitting by idly, we allow China, Cuba, among countless others to oppress their people. Apathy is the worst form of violence, and we must turn our apathy into love if we wish to turn away from the depths of violence into which we are falling. There is no longer a choice between violence and nonviolence, the choice is now between nonviolence and the end of our existance. We are committing suicide upon ourselves, and this is our last chance.It still astounds me that the possibility of nonviolence failing prevents us from attempting it, but violence has failed us for millennia (it has always lead to more violence later on) and it has always been our first option. The great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. put it best when he said:"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate... Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: Only love can do that."I sincerely hope that humanity can at least attempt such a method of compassion for change. Otherwise, we are doomed. I follow the nonviolent teachings of Jesus/the Bible, as expressed in the following verses:Matthew 5:43-48James 3:181 Peter 2:20-23Romans 12:17-21Hebrews 12:14I have been heavily influenced by the likes of Mohandas K. Gandhi, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I am the founder of a local Christian group that advocates nonviolence. I have even been attacked once, without fighting back.
