Don't recall where I found this, it was through friend of a friend of a friend lists, but anyway...Oliver Byrne's edition of EuclidAn unusual and attractive edition of Euclid was published in 1847 in England, edited by an otherwise unknown mathematician named Oliver Byrne. It covers the first 6 books of Euclid, which range through most of elementary plane geometry and the theory of proportions. What distinguishes Byrne's edition is that he attempts to present Euclid's proofs in terms of pictures, using as little text - and in particular as few labels - as possible. What makes the book especially striking is his use of colour.

[mood \|sad] [music	Samira Said: "Ya Habibi Yalla"]I was chatting with my friend Mirabai a few days ago about graduating, and how I thought I was going to cry, and she described it like a 4 year relationship ending... and I think that's a good description. I really love this place. I don't really want to leave. On one hand, I'm excited about going to France, and getting married... and on the other hand, I wish I could come back to classes next August. I know the Program is "over" and I've "completed" it, but I enjoyed it too much to be glad that it's over. I'm proud of myself for going through it and doing a good job, but that's not the same thing as being glad that it's over. I came here because I fell in love with SJC, and that hasn't changed.

I know this community isn't too active, but I thought I should try, nonetheless.I was accepted to St. John's for this fall, but because of familial responsibilities (a promise to complete 30 hours of "real" college, I will be forced to defer to either January or next August.I have two questions:1) Since I'm being forced to complete 30 hours of "real" (in the eyes of my parents) college, what, in context of the program, would you have taken that St. John's doesn't offer. What isn't covered by the program that you would study if you had to go to a state school for a summer and a fall.2) I am contemplating being a January freshman. Has anyone gone through that? Are there any preceptions of the aforementioned students?3) Is anyone familiar with how the St. John's curriculum prepares for economics, since the field is increasingly technical (as far as math goes)...Thanks...

[mood \|curious]Which year at SJC did you feel fit you best, in the terms of the readings and what you studied in classes?For myself, I think senior year is the one that fits me best. I really feel a kinship with most of the readings, and, short of Darwin, haven't found anyone that I find painfully boring, or really ignorantly arrogant (ie: Pascal.).

Dear folks, recently someone has emailed me regarding SJC. She wanted a variety of perspectives. So, here are her emails to me. Please inform her of your own experiences. Thanks,LBegin quoted stuff...I was browsing around Livejournal for St. John's communities because I needed some information for an AP Lang project and I have still not received any response from the website. If you or any other student/alumni of St. John's could fill this out, I would really appreciate it. 1. When you're not in class or doing school-related work, what is there to do on campus? What about Annapolis/Santa Fe and the surrounding area? 2. What is the atmosphere at St. John's like? Is it easy to meet new people? 3. Was it difficult to adjust to the smaller class sizes? 4. This is a big one for me...I'm not very outspoken, so I'm not sure whether I would feel comfortable sharing my ideas and thoughts in a group discussion setting. Did anyone have this problem? Was it easy to overcome? 5. What are your plans for life after college? Do you think that St. John's is preparing you well for further education or employment? [mood \|amused]I just noticed that SJC is listed on RateMyProfessors.com. the two things I found especially amusing were some of the things people selected to list what class they had the Tutor for, and the difference between the types of comments that Johnies left compared to comments that non-Johnies left for their Profs.Happy Thanksgiving all!

The time honored St. John's tradition of drinking beer on the Quad on Wednesday nights in anticipation of a 12:00 a.m. countdown entered into eternal rest this week. It will be sadly missed by Paps swigging Johnnies everywhere.
