Lily sat curled up on one end of the comfy couch in the Gryffindor common room, formulating a reply to the owl she'd gotten from Narcissa. Remus' homework from the day lay beside her, and every so often Lily would raise her head from her letter-writing and look around the room, watching for James or Sirius - or even Remus, himself - so that she might deliver the goods.
She had actually been supposed to talk to Sirius the night before. They'd scheduled a chat that evening, but for some reason, he'd never showed. She'd looked around for him, but couldn't find any hint of him, James or the others. Before she'd gone to bed that night, she supposed that they had probably been in their own room (she hadn't yet been invited in, and so she'd left that off of her list of possible locations-to-search), and hadn't heard her knock... that still didn't explain why she'd been ditched, though. But she guessed that Sirius had just forgotten.
It was just as well, really. She was feeling a little nervous about speaking to him anyway. Mostly due to the piece of paper she held in her hand. Narcissa's words had spurned a flutter of anxiety when she'd first read them over that had settled in for a lengthy stay.
I should greatly enjoy celebrating your birthday, I'll even promise not to criticize Sirius while I'm there.
Meaning, of course, that criticizing Sirius was probably something she did quite often. Or, it certainly sounded like it. After all, why promise not to do something unless you usually always do it? Oh dear...
Sirius hated his family. Would he hate her for making friends with one of its members?
A thumping sound on the landing above startled Lily out of her worrying, and she looked up to see the subject of her inner turmoil making his way down the stairs.
"Sirius!" She called, fearful of his reaction but at the same time knowing it was better handled sooner rather than later, "So there you are."
