No OT posts. If you label it OT, it doesn't belong here. If you start out the entry with "I'm not sure if this belongs here" then it doesn't belong here.

Before you ask a question, please read this link.
If for some reason it's impossible for you to to show us that basic courtesy, please take your question to computerhelp, where they are more willing and able to provide simpler and clearer problem-determination assistance.

A few words from darth_spacey...

I fully intend to be as hands off as possible, and as fair as possible. However, I will make fairness to the group a higher priority than fairness to random question-posters. This means I may get medieval on "The Internet doesn't work" and "Please do my homework" questions.

I'd also like to ask anyone thinking about posting a question to at least do a Google search on their problem symptoms, and search any relevant knowledge bases and FAQs. It's my impression that as a group we love to solve interesting problems, and hate to solve problems for which there is a well-known answer. If you can't take care of at least the initial ground work for your own solution (thus making it easier for us to help you), try asking in computerhelp or tech_support -- although the memberships of all three groups overlap, there's a time and a place for everything, and those groups are more prepared to lead you through the problem-determination steps.

Thanks.

RULES:
1)Please try to limit the topics to computer related dicussion only. If you have any questions feel free to email me or IM the mods via AIM or Yahoo!.
2)Please do not cut down or personally attack other people. If you have a dissagreement about something, that's one thing, but keep from turning it into a bash fest
3)When posting pictures PLEASE use an LJ-CUT. If you have any questions on how to use an lj-cut refer to the FAQ section of livejournal.

You might also find the essay How To Ask Questions The Smart Way very helpful.

After searching the manuals of the problem product, and Google, you might want to try searching this community to see whether anyone else may have had your problem in the past.

FAQ:

  1. My computer is slow/buggy/full of crap/infested with popups. What do I do?

Spybot S&D

Adaware

Grisoft AVG

Zone Alarm

Firefox

1a) I have a machine so laden with crap I can't get online to get Windows Updates. How can I get them?

Use another machine to get them from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-us;sp (thanks, notquitezeus) or http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8973 (thanks, c0c0c0)

  1. I downloaded some illegal software, and I can't get it to work.

Haha. Sucker. Ask elsewhere.

  1. I want help hacking, or making illegal copies of media, or finding illegal copies of software.

See (2). If you have a legitimate need to make backup copies, or you need free software to accomplish a specific task, please be sure to describe your problem carefully.

Any person helping someone break the law is also guilty of breaking the law. Please don't ask us to break the law for you.

Clarification, for the excessively-OCD legal scholars in the audience: Making and owning backup copies is legal, but circumventing copy-protection technology in order to be *able* to make what would otherwise be perfectly legal backups is illegal, at least in the USA. If you find that logically inconsistent, please write your congressperson.

  1. How do I use the Windows Recovery Console?

The Recovery Console can be a very powerful way of fixing things that there's simply no way of fixing while Windows is running. It looks a lot like, but is not entirely the same as, a standard DOS shell. Many commands are missing, and there are some additional commands added.
