is one of the leading novelists in the 19 th century England, and he can be named as a social cri... more is one of the leading novelists in the 19 th century England, and he can be named as a social critique of that era he lived because in his works, Dickens reflects the reality of society and social problems outburst in the 19 th century England which are results of industrialization and urbanization after the Industrial Revolution. Dickens, as a reaction to the social circumstances in that era, criticises child exploitation in his famous novel Oliver Twist (1837). Oliver Twist can be regarded as a good example of both the criticism about corrupted industrialized society and child exploitaion. The protagonist of the novel is Oliver, but child exploitation is not limited by Dickens with Oliver himself. There are other children in the novel, such as Oliver's best friend Dick in orphanage, Nancy, Toby, Barley working for Fagin are exploited by adults, system, rules, and law. As a result, child exploitation in the novel Oliver Twist is divided into five different sections in order to examine this problem deeply. These sections are "hunger, nutrition problems, alcohol and smoking", "child labour and theft", "kidnapping", "punishment" and "results". Results are going to be grouped as pyhsical and psychological. This paper discusses different types of child exploitation in the 19 th century England and its results, and how Dickens reflects and criticises this reality in the novel Oliver Twist.
