Mountain Dew Baja Blast Freeze

The Taco Bell Baja Blast Freeze is a fun drink to recreate at home. Taco Bell calls this drink the Mountain Dew Baja Blast Freeze. I drank Mountain Dew in college mostly for the caffeine to get me through studying for exams.

This recipe is super simple, but it makes for a refreshing treat on a warm day. Unfortunately, it seems that Taco Bell may have discontinued this drink, or it may only be being served in a limited run. All the more reason to make it at home.

Why Call it a Blast?

For some reason, Taco Bell seems to equate this drink to drinking a hurricane. Being a Houston, Texas resident for many years now, I have weathered a couple of hurricanes, and this drink doesn’t taste like a hurricane. A hurricane tastes a little dirty, it’s very wet, and it is often served with a side of barbeque, and some oil that is burning in that lightly used chainsaw.

For me, a hurricane was really an excuse not to go to work, sit around the house without power, and to barbeque everything in sight because my refrigerator was no longer properly functioning. Does this drink taste like this, no – thankfully, no. It doesn’t even remind me of warmish beer. The Baja Blast is refreshing; hurricanes aren’t. Although it does give you a “blast” of refreshment!

Thanks to the reader who provided this more mundane explanation:

I suspect they came up with Baja Blast because they serve both Mountain Dew and Powerade Berry Blast in the fountain drinks, and enterprising employees mixed the two. Would explain the Blast part of the name.

How to Make a Baja Blast Freeze

This fun beverage is quick and easy to make. You really only need two ingredients, regular Mountain Dew and Powerade Berry Blast – plus ice of course.

I find this drink to be a refreshing beverage to serve up on a hot day, and it’s perfect to sip poolside. Even the color looks refreshing. For best results use cold Mountain Dew when you start, this way the drink will retain more of its fizz after it is run through the blender.
