The use of new types of fibre with high density and high capacity dense wavelength division multi... more The use of new types of fibre with high density and high capacity dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems leads to the investigation of system performance with these fibres. This paper compares the performance of a high-density (0.8bits/s/Hz) DWDM transmission system with 25 channels and 40Gb/s per channel with a channel spacing of 50GHz, using conventional single-mode fibre or non-zero dispersion shifted fibre (NZDSF). For this, semi-analytical simulation of the DWDM system is performed using rigorous models for optical multiplexer and external modulator. Nonlinear transmission phenomena in the fibre are also included in the simulation. The results show that NZDSF allows significant extension of reachable distances with dispersion compensation and in-line amplification.

A straightforward numerical method of obtaining the physical dimensions of a real device for given -3dB bandwidth and free spectral range is presented. The paper assesses also the influence of the -3dB bandwidth of the AWG on the performance of a dense wavelength division multiplexing system with 25 channels, channel spacing of 50GHz and full width half maximum of 40GHz. _____________________________________________________________________

An improved numerical model incorporating the SDP effect for two-level EDFAs is derived and experimentally validated. We confirm by comparing with experimental data that the proposed model accurately describes the dependence of the amplifier gain spectrum on the pump wavelength and pump power. We conclude that SDP has a significant impact on the dynamic response of an EDFA due to input spectral variations and should be considered when simulating high performance links.

The statistics of quadrature phase-shift keying with coherent-detection and polarization multiple... more The statistics of quadrature phase-shift keying with coherent-detection and polarization multiplexing (CP-QPSK) signal at the decision circuit input is assessed by numerical simulation for different local oscillator-to-signal (LO/S) power ratios. It is shown that the signal statistics at the decision circuit input is approximately Gaussian distributed for high LO/S power ratios. However, the mean and variance of the Gaussian distribution that approximates the statistics of each symbol depend on the transmitted symbol sequence, especially for low LO/S power ratios, demonstrating the impact of the waveform on the statistics of the detected signal. Moreover, the signal statistics starts to deviate from Gaussian for LO/S power ratios below 17 dB. A semi-analytical simulation method (SASM) based on the Gaussian approximation for the signal statistics at the decision circuit input is used for performance evaluation of CP-QPSK system. The accuracy of the SASM is assessed for different LO/S power ratios by comparison with Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation results. The SASM shows good agreement with MC simulation results for LO/S power ratios between 6 and 30 dB.
