Data from a standard high-fiber count, buried, ducted cable of recent vintage (c. 1999) NZ-DSF fiber (True Wave Reduced Slope) are presented. This includes long-term measurements from interferometric and wavelength-scanned techniques as well as a new in-situ technique. Some of the challenges for PMD are also discussed.

Blind polarization de-multiplexing of 60 and 114-Gb/s PDM-8QAM is demonstrated using a new cascaded two-modulus algorithm.

The PDL varies on a time-scale of hours, and the PDL of adjacent channels often track.

Nevertheless, given the relentless growth of demand for communications services, telecommunications providers will need to transition to more energy-efficient technology in order to limit their own environmental footprint. Here we focus on priority-setting for the transition process. We introduce a method for statistically inferring the electricity consumption of different components of the installed base of telecommunications equipment, while avoiding the high cost of performing direct measurements. Our method relies only on databases of installed equipment in central offices, together with aggregate electricity consumption per office. It takes advantage of inter-office variation in installed equipment to partition per-office electricity consumption by major equipment type. When applied to a collection of 3,918 central offices of a major U.S. telecommunications provider, our approach reveals the (previously unknown) network-wide energy consumption of each major type of equipment. In particular, we find that electricity consumption is dominated by Class-5 telephone switches, which account for 43% of aggregate consumption, and which should therefore be a primary target of central office electricity conservation efforts.

Note that pre-equalization of deterministic transmitter filtering effects is better than post-equalization because post-equalization will enhance noise components and thus reduces the signal-to-noise ratio (compare Fig. 1b and 1c). ...

Dramatic changes in the PMD spectrum due to temperature sensitive components were observed.

Correlation between Differential Group Delay and Bit-Error Rate is observed.

Unexpectedly, the statistical distributions of these measurements deviate strongly from existing theory. We offer evidence that analysis of measurement statistics themselves can indicate their validity.
