Project organization and management, including the creation of instruments and analysis of results across two local research teams and institutional cultures is discussed. Effective communications, among and between project teams, and time management were identified as critical factors for success. Benefits resulting from the project included an improved understanding of the needs of a key user group, a heightened interest in user assessment and data-driven decision making among staff within the partner organizations, and a deeper engagement with important academic administrators on both campuses.

In order to investigate the local needs of doctoral students in the humanities and whether the library can positively impact their success, the Cornell University Library and Columbia University Libraries undertook a collaborative ethnographic user needs study in 2010-2011.2 Library staff at the two institutions conducted five focus groups and 45 individual interviews with doctoral students in the humanities, focusing on those in English, Religion, History and Classics programs. In this paper, our analysis is limited to the 21 individual interviews with Cornell graduate students. Our interviews revealed that there is no ...

Amidst the overall trend of shrinking budgets that libraries are experiencing, what strategies can be employed by libraries that support large universities to plan IL instruction? The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Inspired by curriculum mapping, staff in the library assessment department created teaching maps which match the curriculum from seven colleges with the library’s teaching efforts. To create them, they combined information about: first, courses that librarians have instructed over the last three years with; second, required courses for majors within the colleges; and third, typical enrollment for each course. Findings – Easily accessible information was combined to create the teaching maps, which enable the library to realign efforts to ...
