Tidball, Ph.D. Cornell University Outdoor recreation is gaining attention as a novel and very useful modality for dealing with a host of ailments and injures that returning combatants face. As a veteran I have my own outdoor recreation experiences to augment my own interest in this phenomenon, and as a scholar and practitioner in this area, I have followed with fascination the proliferation of this approach. I began tracking organizations involved in outdoor recreation targeted specifically at injured returning warriors in 2007. At that time I was only aware of a handful of small groups making efforts, and now, there are hundreds, many of them extremely well -funded and organized. Within this growth of outdoor recreation focused upon returning warriors generally, there has been a corresponding increase in consumptive outdoor recreation programs, mainly dealing with recreation forms such as fishing and hunting. However, at the recent gathering of scientists and practitioners...

Beneficial environmental, personal health, and nutrition claims are often linked to locally-sourced foods. Yet, because many species of wild game and fish that are legal to hunt or catch do not have nutrient data in the USDA food composition database these claims, especially in the realm of nutrition, are not well substantiated. To address this gap, the Cornell research team, collaborated with USDA scientists to address shortcomings in nutrition information for several wild game and fish species, in this case Ruffed Grouse. A wildlife biologist with the Ruffed Grouse Society collected bird samples according to USDA-determined collection protocols to obtain edible meat portions. Nutrient analysis was conducted on raw Ruffed Grouse breast meat samples at USDA-validated laboratories using approved quality assurance procedures. Analytical data were sent to NDL scientists, who reviewed and compiled...

In the 105th Congress strong support for removing encryption export restrictions and allowing U.S. software firms to compete in the world marketplace was balanced by concern that widespread availability of such systems could undercut important law enforcement and intelligence interests. No encryption legislation passed in the 105th Congress. The Clinton Administration relaxed some restrictions on encryption sales based on existing export legislation, but opposes the complete lifting of restrictions out of concern that use of highly sophisticated encryption might hinder law enforcement and intelligence collection efforts. The views of law enforcement agencies have been forcefully set forth by FBI Director Louis Freeh, but less has been said about the implications for the collection of foreign intelligence especially by the National Security Agency (NSA) w...

The authors expand upon the conceptualization of peace since the 1980s and the widening of the ecology concept from the natural to the social sciences, and then discuss linkages between peace and different ecological approaches of deep, human, social, geographic and political geoecology and ecofeminism. They then contextualize from a peace research perspective the expansion of the ecology concept to a ‘political geoecology’ and a ‘civic ecology’, linking security, equity, sustainability, gender and peace. They conclude with an overview of the subsequent eight chapters in this volume.

Such practices, although often viewed as initiatives to improve a degraded environment, also foster social attributes of resilient social-ecological systems, including volunteer engagement and social connectedness. Civic ecology education refers to the learning, as well as the social and ecosystem outcomes, that occur when young people and other novices engage alongside experienced adults in civic ecology practice.

Such councils will provide an unprecedented level of transparency and will enable the realization of citizens’ procedural rights to access information and participate in decision-making regarding industrial activities.

But what of the role of access to green space and the act of creating and caring for such places in promoting social health and well-being? Greening in the Red Zone asserts that creation and access to green spaces confers resilience and recovery in systems disrupted by violent conflict or disaster. This edited volume provides evidence for this assertion through cases and examples. The contributors to this volume use a variety of research and policy frameworks to explore how creation and access to green spaces in extreme situations might contribute to resistance, recovery, and resilience of social-ecological systems.
