The authors, using both primary and secondary data sources, argue that violence as perpetuated by political players (individuals and groups), serves as a means of preventing election fraud by the State and its agents, while for the State, violence is used as a tool of intimidation and harassment by incumbent regimes (both at national and regional levels) to retain political power. The paper concludes by maintaining that political violence will continue to thrive in the democratic politics of Nigeria unless the institutions of democracy, including Security Agencies in the country function in accordance with their constitutional mandates, as well as political actors conducting themselves by the rules of democratic practices in political activities.

The privatization decision resulted from demands associated with the international institutions such as the World Bank and globalization in general. The sad reality, however, is that privatization in Nigeria has been abominably politicized, climaxing at political patronage and cronyism as clearly shown by biased selection of candidates, inadequate regulatory framework and the poor mode of privatization. Using the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) as a Case Study, this dissertation rehearses the problematical scenery of privatization in Nigeria, and how privatization, rather than serving as an economic reformatory tool, has been used as a tool for political settlements. The result of the study corroborates previous researchers‟ position that privatization in Nigeria failed to deliver the economic goal of efficiency and impro...

The African continent has continued to struggle behind other continents of the world as a result of the failure of leadership to address the political and socio-economic challenges of the continent. Thus, bedevilled with the challenges of development, the African continent is in need of people-centred leadership. However, as the continent struggles to overcome its political and development predicaments, it is stuck in the dystopia of demagoguery that promises nothing but apocalyptic future for its teeming population. Thus, despite the enormous resources available in Africa, leadership failures have made progress difficult to achieve. At the centre of this leadership failure are demagogues: a set of leaders who have influence over a large number of people but take advantage of that influence to undermine democracy and good governance. Citing various ...

However, over time the ideals and provisions of modern societal values and laws that lay emphasis on social justice and equity of status and opportunity have not been observed to the letter on matters relating to women. With particular reference to Nigeria, evidence abound of increasing cases of domestic violence against women through the acts of battering, rape, infidelity, divorce, burial rites, property ownership and inheritance etc which is an obvious reflection of gender inequalities and women's victimization. This paper examined the inadequacies associated with the custom and legal system to practically enforce the protection and preservation of women's rights against acts of violence. The paper highlights further the inconsistency in various civil and cultural laws to mitigate the propagation of v...

This remains the core of development problems that underline the principal objective of development policy as embodied in the Millennium Declaration. Despite significant improvements over the past 50 years in advancing human well-being, extreme poverty and inequities remain widespread in the developing world. The world today is characterized by vertiginous accumulation of wealth by a few to the exclusion of larger majority who suffer untold hardrhip and Impoverishment. These conditions have been exacerbated by the adoption of free market paradigm anchored on private accumulation. This has engendered an overlap of all types of injustice and social polarization that now define the basis for social life in most countries of the world, including Nigeria where 70 percent of the population lives below US$ one dollar a day. As an exploratory study, secondary sources ofdata we...

In the very face of the avalanche of criticisms, capitalist system continues to successfully transverse the whole globe as the most promising economic system in achieving individual progress and national development. Thus, we must be honest to ourselves that the forces behind capitalism are more than ever fortified to see that no opposing forces fruitfully challenge or destroys the system, so that we must necessarily move from challenging the system as a whole, but rather the identifiable ills of the system, with a view to strongly appealing to the benefactors of the capitalist system, both as individuals and nations, to use the proceeds of capitalism to positively impact the lives of the poor people and nations of the world. In this paper, it is argued that benevolent capitalism, if consciously pursued by ...

Findings of the study provide ample evidence of gross violations of the human rights of her citizen as perpetuated by the police. The government’s lack of commitment to pursuing democratic ideals of human rights is identified to be a major setback of those fighting injustice in the nation. The study also found that majority of the victims of human rights violations by the police are innocent of the offences they were accused of committing. The study recommends viable ways of significantly reducing the on-going incidences of human rights violations in Nigeria so as to restore the confidence of the citizens in the police force.

The result of the study corroborates previous researchers‟ position that privatization in Nigeria failed to deliver the economic goal of efficiency and improved productivity. In the case of NITEL particularly, the results of the study (using information and data collected on NITEL, a thorough insight of the performance after privatization exercise were taken with references to some performance indicators such as profitability, operating efficiency, capital investment, leverage and employment), showed that the company almost experienced bankruptcy before the Nigerian government revoked the sale from Transnational Corporations (TRANSCORP). The pinnacle of the findings of the study reveals that political corruption and institutional failures are the most responsible factors for the failure of privatization in Nigeria, generally, and in the case of NITEL, particularly.
