This principle involves system design that minimizes environmentally harmful energy emissions and resource consumption, and maximizes renewable energy practices [1]. Communication antennas transmit wireless signals that can be converted into usable energy. The Rectenna system described in this report, shown in Figure 1, was designed to accomplish this energy conversion, with 5dBm (316µW) minimum power at the rectifier input. Since typical ambient signal power is in the 70dBm (0.1nW) range, the proposed system could only convert passive, relatively highpower microwave band AC signals to DC. The Rectenna system was designed for 1.9GHz signal reception; however, the greatest ambient 1.9GHz signal power measured in Cal Poly's Microwave Lab was in the 75dBm (31pW) to 70dBm (100pW) range, shown in Table 1. The team provided an external 1.9GHz source (20dBm to 3dBm) to verify the design.

FDI to China significantly promotes its reform and opening-up while this also creates a condition for its attraction in return. China’s opening-up to the outside world has not had any available reference model, and there has been no ways of emulating other countries’ experience. What has been done instead is to grope forward, to learn from various lessons, and to perfect its practice based on the conditions in China. Despite its arduous exploratory journey, China’s FDI has shown the world its historic experiments by virtue of its achievements. With China entering a new stage in FDI in the 21 century, it is of great practical importance and theoretical value to review and explore the practice by applying a scientific and histo...

This project highlights major differences between the applicable HRV/ERV standards for North American passive houses: the European Passive House Institute standard, the Canadian CSA-439-09 standard, and the American HVI-920 standard. It further examines the proposed PHIUS protocol which established ɳPHUIS, a modified HRV/ERV heat recovery efficiency rating to more accurately reflect the North American climate. Simulations were performed to quantify its effect on the modelled annual heat demand for 31 certified passive houses. The results yielded two key findings. First, the margin of error for the new rating, ɳPHUIS, relative to the existing rating, Ɛ, is a function of the regional climate given by the equation: y = 0.00001x + 0.0012. Locations with a colder climate hav...

Three-Dimensional Imaging, Interaction, and Measurement, 2011

The detection of objects on a given road path by vehicles equipped with range measurement devices... more The detection of objects on a given road path by vehicles equipped with range measurement devices is important to many civilian and military applications such as obstacle avoidance in autonomous navigation systems. In this thesis, we develop a method to detect objects of a specific size lying on a road using an acquisition vehicle equipped with forward looking Light Detection And Range (LiDAR) sensors and inertial navigation system. We use GPS data to accurately place the LiDAR points in a world map, extract point cloud clusters protruding from the road, and detect objects of interest using weighted random forest trees. We show that our proposed method is effective in identifying objects for several road datasets collected with various object locations and vehicle speeds.

Research paper thumbnail of On-chip magnetic separation of superparamagnetic beads for integrated molecular analysis

Journal of Applied Physics, 2010

Initially, 4.5 m wide superparamagnetic beads sedimenting out of solution due to gravity were attracted to the detection area by a magnetic concentration force generated by flowing current through a conductor embedded in the IC. After sedimentation, the magnetic beads that did not bind strongly to the functionalized surface of the IC through a specific biochemical complex were removed by a magnetic separation force generated by flowing current through another conductor placed laterally to the detection area. As the spherical bead pivoted on the surface of the chip, the lateral magnetic force was further amplified by mechanical leveraging, and 50 mA of current flowing through the separation conductor placed 18 m away from the bead resulted in 7.5 pN of tensile force on the biomolecular tether immobilizing the bead. This force proved high enough to break nonspecific interactions while leaving specific antibody-antigen bonds intact. A sandwich capture immunoassay on purified human immunoglobulin G showed strong correlation with a control enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and a detection limit of 10 ng/ml or 70 pM. The beads bound to the detection area after on-chip magnetic separation were detected optically. To implement a fully integrated molecular diagnostics platform, the on-chip magnetic separation functionality presented in this work can be readily combine with state-of-the art CMOS-based magnetic bead detection technology.

In the present study, we used oligonucleotides consisting of a novel 3-3-linked structure and synthetic stimulatory motifs, referred as second-generation immunomodulatory oligonucleotides (IMOs). The stimulatory motifs included: CpR, YpG, or R pG (R = 2-deoxy-7-deazaguanosine, Y = 2-deoxy-5-hydroxy-cytidine, and R = 1-[2-deoxy-␤-d-ribofuranosyl]-2-oxo-7-deaza-8-methyl-purine). We evaluated the stability of orally administered IMOs in the gastrointestinal (GI) environment and their ability to induce mucosal immune responses in mice, and compared these characteristics with those of a conventional CpG DNA. The IMOs were significantly more stable than CpG DNA following oral administration, and IMOs induced stronger local and systemic immune responses as determined by MIP-1␤, MCP-1, IP-10, and IL-12 production. Mice orally immunized with ovalbumin (OVA) and IMO had higher levels of IgG2a antibodies in serum and IgA antibodies in intestinal mucosa than did mice immunized with OVA and CpG DNA. These studies demonstrate that IMOs are more stable than CpG DNA in the GI tract and can induce more potent mucosal Th1 adjuvant responses. IMOs may prove to be effective oral adjuvants, able to promote strong systemic and mucosal immune responses to oral vaccines and antigens for therapeutic and prophylactic applications.

In the present study, we used a synthetic nucleoside with a bicyclic heterobase [1-(2′-deoxy-β- d -ribofuranosyl)-2-oxo-7-deaza-8-methyl-purine; R] to replace the C in CpG, resulting in an RpG dinucleotide. The RpG dinucleotide was incorporated in mouse- and human-specific motifs in oligodeoxynucleotides (oligos) and 3′-3-linked oligos, referred to as immunomers. Oligos containing the RpG motif induced cytokine secretion in mouse spleen-cell cultures. Immunomers containing RpG dinucleotides showed activity in transfected-HEK293 cells stably expressing mouse TLR9, suggesting direct involvement of TLR9 in the recognition of RpG motif. In J774 macrophages, RpG motifs activated NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways. Immunomers containing the RpG dinucleotide induced high levels of IL-12 and IFN-γ, but lower IL-6 ...

Research paper thumbnail of Immunomodulatory oligonucleotides containing a cytosine-phosphate-2′-deoxy-7-deazaguanosine motif as potent Toll-like receptor 9 agonists

Here, we compare the immunostimulatory activity of three immunomers with different nucleotide sequences containing a synthetic cytosine-phosphate-2′-deoxy-7-deazaguanosine dinucleotide (CpR), called immunomodulatory oligonucleotides (IMOs), in mouse, human, and monkey systems. IMOs induced IL-12 and IFN-γ secretion more than a control non-CpG IMO in mice. All three IMOs activated HEK293 cells expressing TLR9 but not TLR3, -7, or -8. IMOs induced human B-cell proliferation and enhanced expression of CD86 and CD69 surface markers on B cells. The three IMOs induced CD86 expression on human plasmacytoid dendritic cells, but only IMOs that contained a 5′-terminal TCR nucleotide sequence induced IFN-α secretion. A sequence that forms a duplex structure also was required for IFN-α induction in human peripheral blood mononuclear cell cultures. IMOs induced chemok...
