Introduction: Admission of the patient to the intensive care unit (ICU) is generally unanticipate... more Introduction: Admission of the patient to the intensive care unit (ICU) is generally unanticipated situation for family members. This causes psychological problems such as crisis, stress and depression among them. Hence this study was conducted with the objectives (1) to assess the lived experiences and level of stress among family members of patients admitted at critical care areas (2) to find association of level of stress with their selected socio-demographic variables. Materials and Methods: This mixed method research using both qualitative and quantitative approaches was conducted from March-April 2021 among 100 family members of the critically ill patients which were selected by using purposive sampling technique at intensive care units of Pravara Rural Hospital Loni, Maharashtra. The data collection tool consisted of socio-demographic data of the participants; semi structured questionnaires to explore the lived experiences of the family members and stress scale developed by Cohen, Kamarck and Mermelstein. Results: Mainly eight themes emerged through content analysis of the lived experiences. These included (1) Painful experience (2) Feeling worried, nervous and tense (3) Uncertainty and fear about recovery (4) Difficult and challenging situation (5) Financial problems (6) Belief in god (7) Social support and (8) Satisfaction with health care team. Findings on stress shows that majority i.e. 97% participants had moderate stress. The mean stress score was 28.14, which also reveals that family members of critically ill patients have moderate level of stress. There was a significant association of stress with education, monthly family income, health status condition of the patient and relationship with the patient at 5% level of significance. Conclusion: Based on the finding it is concluded that family members of critically ill patients experience moderate level of stress. Stress management strategies may be implemented for them, which would be helpful in keeping their nerves calm, improving coping skills and promoting their mental health.

Objective: The primary objective of this study was to assess the sleep quality of post-operative orthopedic patients. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional survey was conducted from July 2021-April 2022 on post-operative orthopaedic patients at orthopaedic wards of select multispecialty teaching hospital located in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra state, India. Sample size for this study was determined to be 90. Using systematic random sampling, every 6 th eligible post-operative orthopaedic patient was consented and enrolled in the study. Pittsburgh sleep quality index was used to assess the sleep quality of the participants. Data was collected from participants by using interview technique at the time of discharge from the hospital. The software used in the analysis were SPSS 24.0 and Graph Pad Prism 7.0 version. Results: 81.11% of post-operative orthopaedic patients had poor and 18.89% of patients had good level of sleep quality. Mean sleep quality score among postoperative orthopedic patients was 8.55±3.38. Most affected component of sleep quality was daytime dysfunction (1.87 ± 0.73) followed by disturbances in subjective sleep quality (1.83 ± 0.69). 61.1% participants reported moderate sleep disturbances. Conclusion: Based on the findings of the study it is concluded that post-operative orthopaedic patients experiences poor sleep quality and prevalence of sleep disturbances is very high. depression following musculoskeletal trauma, which goes unrecognized and untreated. Objectives:
The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of psychotherapeutic
interventions on anxiety and depression among the post-operative orthopaedic patients Methods: A
true experimental study with post-test only design was conducted on 100 post-operative orthopaedic
patients. By adapting systematic random sampling, every third post-operative orthopaedic patient
fulfilling the eligibility criteria was recruited in the study. Participants in the study group (No. 50)
received psychotherapeutic interventions such as counselling, deep breathing exercises, education and
back massage along with routine care, whereas participants from control group (No. 50) received only
routine care. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) was used to measure anxiety and
depression at the time of discharge from the hospital. Results: After implementation of
psychotherapeutic interventions, mean anxiety score for study group was 5.76 ± 3.14 and that of
control group was 8.32 ± 3.23. Mean depression score for study group was 4.84 ± 3.28 and that of
control group was 8.32 ± 4.46. `t` values for anxiety and depression were 5.90 & 6.49 respectively,
which were significant. Correlation coefficient for study group (r = 0.84) and that of for control group
(r = 0.91) shows highly positive correlation ship between anxiety and depression. Conclusion:
Psychotherapeutic interventions were found to be effective in reducing anxiety and depression among
the post-operative orthopaedic patients.
