The intention of this paper is to make the reader aware of the important role of work integrated learning (WIL) as part of a curriculum and also how the recent mergers within the South African higher education institutions made the marketing of WIL simple. In the first part of the paper I will focus on the recent mergers within the South African higher education institutions and the impact on the WIL programmes, with specific reference to Fashion and Clothing. With the elimination of the technikon structure and the implementation of three types of university structures throughout South Africa, a concern of losing the practical education component within the higher education surfaced amongst the general public and the industry.

WIL is a practical application of the academic theory and application can be performed in class as well. Therefore, WIL should be implemented as an integrated part of the Higher education not only on campus but off campus as well. This is a different approach taken in order to make learning more appropriate in and out of class.

The importance of service learning is reflected in countries across the globe, such as the Learn and Serve America project when, in 1990, the American government made grants available to integrate community service with curricula through service learning. This grant fosters, amongst other, collaboration between institutions of higher education to meet immediate community needs. This discussion paper deliberate the role of service learning in South Africa with a specific focus on Universities of Technologies. At the 2010 South African Society for Cooperative Education (SASCE) conference, the development of the youth was foremost in most of the discussions and presentations. When the development of youth and the theories for successful youth development merge, the importance of service learning through community and practical projects, emerge. This discussion will reflect on the current projects within Universities of Technologies, and indicate whether these projects are monitored and reflected on effectively. Service learning can only be fully successful within higher education if student can reflect and place their learning. Theorists John Dewey and David Kolb both agreed that service learning should incorporate both individual participation and the engagement in reflective thinking. Only in this way, a student will develop a greater understanding of himself and the content he is engaging.
