Creating policy interventions to reduce plastic consumption requires objective information about local conditions. This study uses a choice experiment to elicit consumer preference for attributes of shopping bags from a sample of 250 consumers in Cape Town. Following the literature, we estimate the conditional logit model and the mix logit model and perform appropriate tests to establish a model which fits our data. Our results show that consumers in Cape Town prefer small and medium-sized bags relative to the status quo. They also care about durability, reusability, style, and recyclability of shopping bags. The highest willingness to pay is associated with a medium-sized shopping bag (R3.76), followed by a shopping bag that is reusable (R3.35), then a shopping bag that is styled (R2.16), then a sma...

The South African departments of education are making efforts to realize the use of technology in schools. The COVID-19 pandemic has an adverse impact on the education sector and accelerated the adoption of technology by many institutions with some shifting to distant learning to ensure academic continuity. There are various educational technologies. The aim of the study is to explore public high school learners' perspectives on e-learning and the challenges in its adoption. Secondary data is used to draw conclusion. An interpretivism paradigm with an exploratory sequential mixed-method approach is used. The findings show that e-learning implementation needs careful consideration and planning. The results of this study indicate that lack of access to devices, the high cost of internet access, a perceived lack of interest among teachers and perceived ineffectiveness are the key challenges to e-learning adoption in South African public schools within poor communities. Addressing key challenges will ensure a successful implementation of elearning.

This study examined township taverns (small-medium and micro informal liquor retailers) in South Africa to determine survival strategies during and after covid-19. 30 tavern owners and managers were interviewed using phenomenological qualitative research design. Township taverns need to form strategic units to benefit from bulk buying discounts and diversify product and service offerings. The study recommended further research to determine what business development services and government support township taverns need.

However, stakeholder perceptions of these PHEIs are generally negative, primarily due to the negative perceptions of the qualification obtained from the private institutions by both parents and students and questions around the sustainability of the institutions in the long run. Media reports, lack of Department of Education (DHET) support and funding, and minimum, if any, marketing and advertising from the PHEI are factors cited for these firmly entrenched perceptions from the general public. Both emerging and international markets drove the article, countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, India and Brazil; not as a comparative study, but more as a literature review on how tertiary education is managed in the private sector in these countries. In addition, developing countries a...

It operates within global consumer international networks. The underpinning models of internationalisation of gold jewellery from a theoretical standpoint, are key in comprehending export competitiveness potential. This means that for any company and country to achieve success, they ought to have competitive dominance in the export market, driven by a particular model. This study established that the main trends that characterise gold jewellery exports are underpinned by an aggressive internalisation thrust, which should be supported by market consolidation; market growth; a new channel landscape to push through the products; market consumption trends, absorption capacity, and global fast-fashion demand of gold jewellery. It emerged in this study, that the gold jewellery sector in Johannesburg has many dynamics that affect the ability of gold jewellery exporters to be competitive on the international market. There is a need to imple...

Research paper thumbnail of An analysis of Granger causality between sovereign credit rating and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa

Without credit ratings, developing economies would not have been able to successfully issue their sovereign bonds to support economic growth. Therefore, this paper examines a causality relationship between Standard & Poor’s long-term foreign currency sovereign credit ratings and economic growth in 19 Sub-Saharan countries over the period from 2003 to 2018. The results of the Granger causality tests show a unidirectional causality from sovereign credit ratings to economic growth, not vice versa. This implies that economic growth is not significant in determining sovereign credit ratings. It can thus be concluded from these findings that sovereign credit ratings are proactive actions by rating agencies that are relevant in determining future economic growth. Thus, investors benefit from utilizing credit ratings to prevent ...
