Philip Jeck: Mixed by more eaze (original) (raw)
Earlier this year, on 25 March, Philip Jeck died aged 69.
A celebrated turntablist, multimedia artist and experimental composer, Jeck passed away following a brief period of illness. UK label Touch, helmed by Jon Wozencroft and Mike Harding, confirmed the news in a statement.
Remembering Jeck, who released the majority of his albums – including 2002’s Stoke and 2015’s Cardinal – via the imprint, the label founders described their late friend as “a remarkable man and an amazing artist” who had been “one of the pivotal figures of our work for 30 years”.
Austin-based composer and producer Mari Maurice, better known as more eaze, is one of the many artists whose sound has been shaped by Jeck’s imaginative and alchemistic approach to music-making.
Speaking on today’s Specialist Mix, which was created in tribute to Jeck, Maurice told Crack Magazine: “Philip Jeck’s work has been a longtime inspiration of mine. The way he approached sampling felt like it was a love letter to music and sound itself. For this tribute mix, I wanted to present an array of the diverse sounds and styles that Jeck often filtered through his singular lens.”
“As a further homage,” she added, “I superimposed, processed, and blended certain moments of his work together in a manner similar to his approach to sampling.” RIP Philip Jeck.
