Welcome to your second check-in! Here's the spreadsheet if I missed anyone from the previous post. For those writing mini-bangs, this is also where you inform us if you'd like to switch to big bangs. Simply copy/paste the form below and please note that if you are writing more than one story, you may place all your forms in one comment:

QUICK REMINDERS:
+ Due to RL issues including some unforeseen internet problems for the past two weeks (which kept me from doing my last-minute promoting), I will be extending sign-ups for another week or so.
+ Please also remember that we need artists for this challenge and though sign-ups for them remain open until August, we could definitely use some now to make sure that few or no stories go without art. If you know anyone who is interested, kindly direct them to this post.

Welcome to your first check-in! Though this is technically optional, you are encouraged to tell me how you're doing as I'll be marking your progress down on the spreadsheet. Simply copy/paste the form below:

* By the way, if you are writing more than one story, you may place all your forms in one comment.

QUICK REMINDERS:
+ Sign-ups for authors close on May 28th! You have a little less than a month to decide if you want to write for this challenge and to remind friends who are interested.
+ Please also remember that we need artists for this challenge and though sign-ups for them remain open until August, we could definitely use some now to make sure that few or no stories go without art. If you know anyone who is interested, kindly direct them to this post.

I hope you're all having fun so far! And if you haven't started writing yet (procrastinators unite!), maybe you can try at least 100-500 words today and eventually pick it up from there. In any case, here are some reminders and general news about the community:

1. Our first check-in is happening on April 30th (Monday). Technically, it's optional and you don't have to feel too pressured yet, but it would help me out a lot if you came on down and told me how far along you are. This is because check-ins tell us if we need to extend deadlines, among other things. And with the number of participants we have so far, a bit of discipline is a given.

2. That being said, I would like you all to know that we currently have nearly 50 fandoms on our roster! Here's the spreadsheet if you want to take a look at it yourself. I counted in a hurry but we supposedly have 45 participating authors so far and 65 stories waiting to be written and/or submitted. While I feel this is quite the accomplishment already, I'm also still urging you all to tell your friends and help spread the word because we could always use more participants. We also need more artists and as with most big bangs, sign-ups for them don't pick up as quick until the last second. I would like to prepare for that ahead of time, so that none of your stories will be left without art.

3. After thinking about it, I've decided to have two posts during the claiming period. One will be for those who signed up to write big bangs and the other will for those who decided to write mini-bangs. Artists can comment and claim in both posts, and as a maximum will be allowed to commit to creating art for two big bangs and two mini-bangs. The minimum requirements for art submissions for both types of stories are detailed in the FAQ.

4. Don't forget to check out the friending meme to meet your fellow participants, and the pick-me-up post if you need to get some writing troubles off your chest. We are a community above all and are here to help and inspire each other.

5. For some reason, there are times when I don't get notifications for comments. I feel that this may be an LJ issue so I'll leave it at that, but if you really need to contact me about anything, feel free to send me a PM as well. If at any point you decide to drop out, by the way, this post is where to do it. You won't get banned or receive any sort of punishment, so don't be afraid to tell me if you can't finish. I would much prefer that over people disappearing in the middle of the challenge.

That's all for now, I think. But if you feel I missed anything just comment below. I'll be back on Monday to post the first check-in. See you all then!

Abe: It's alright, you're a good pitcher.
Mihashi: That's not true. :(
Abe: You are a good pitcher!
Mihashi: That's not true! ;A;
Abe: I SAID YOU ARE A GOOD PITCHER! (Dammit.)

Sometimes our ideas don't work out as planned, sometimes we need someone to kick us back into shape, sometimes we just need someone to listen. So here's a place to vent and let out all your worries. Other members will then reply to your comment with a kind word or two, maybe with a gif, or maybe just to tell you you're not alone. :)

crackship_bb isn't just a challenge, it's a community. So take a look around! You're in the company of fandom's most insane, most extraordinary, most crackishly fantabulous authors and artists. And you, my dear, are one of them! :) Having said that, are you interested in making some new friends? Copy/paste the form below and try to answer all the questions. In fact, try to reply to as many members as you can. They may surprise you.

~PIMPING CODES:

Hello, my freaky little darlings!

Bad news: Sign-ups DO NOT officially open on March 26, 2012. Good news: They open TODAY! :D Why, Kat, why? Because it is officially summer break for me - I just had my last exam - and I was honestly getting a bit impatient. I can't wait to see your ideas and I'm sure you can't wait to get started, so we're going to hop to it. But wait, I've got two more little surprises headed your way. In a few minutes, I'll be hosting (1) a friending meme - because this is not just a challenge, this is a community; and (2) a pick-me-up/venting post - which we will keep open throughout the round. That said, I wish you luck in choosing your pairings and thank you for being apart of this big bang.

AUTHORS | ARTISTS

... That is the question! Are you unsure if your chosen pairing is really considered a crack ship or not? I know there are so many exceptions, what with all the subtext in canon. (Or was that fanon? Oh my.) So I've decided to try and ease your uncertainties. Note that the definition for "crack ship" in this community may be a bit different from the general definition, but the purpose of all this is to get everyone, including myself, in order.

Okay, so for crackship_bb, what is considered a crack ship?

In the FAQ, we have defined a "crack ship" as a pairing which consists of characters who have barely interacted or who have not shown any interest in each other in canon. Interest beyond friendship or merely coexisting with each other, we mean. They may have not met or may not even be from the same fandom, in fact. But there are so many loopholes for this! So let's talk about what a crack ship is NOT for this challenge:

1. A crack ship is often not a main ship in a fandom; it's not a fandom favorite, both in a good way and bad way. I say "often" because there are also really popular crack ships. You know, the ones which stem from epic relationships (i.e. epic bromance, epic friendship, epic rivalry, epic stalking, etc.)? Yes, I'm sure you ship one or two of those, too.

2. A crack ship often does not make sense. Well, to you, it might - but it'll take a while to convince the rest of them. It's that pairing you talk about with your friends and they react by saying, "Really? Why them?" And sometimes, there are worse reactions than that. Anyway, some fans block that whole concept out in favor of more fanservicey ships, or because of the last point.

3. A crack ship is not likely to happen in canon. Probably because the two characters are siblings or have totally different mindsets or have completely different love interests and/or, in relation to that, plot lines. Or they just haven't had enough screen time together. (That last bit irks me to no end.)

What do I have to look out for?

Saying YES to any of these questions: Is my pairing a fandom favorite? Is my pairing likely to happen in canon? Beyond my own reasoning, does this pairing actually make sense?

If you did, then it's probably not considered a crack pairing for this challenge. The point of this big bang is to challenge its participants to create something away from their comfort zone or their fandom's comfort zone. I personally grew to love one of my OTPs because of roleplaying, which was a bit different from what I normally enjoyed doing in fandom. Maybe it's time for you to try something new as well. Explore new relationships which weren't given chances to happen in canon. Or challenge yourself to make something happen between characters who seemingly have nothing in common.

I'm still not sure about my pairing. Help?

Send me the miles and I'll be happy to! If you're still confused and/or didn't get some of that, leave a comment, send me a PM, or e-mail us at crackshipbigbang@gmail.com. I'm sure we can work something out. And for the rest of you trying to figure out what pairing to use, happy hunting. :)

This post is where we will be keeping banners for promoting the challenge. Feel free to make your own and share it with the rest of the community. (We will be sure to credit you!) Simply copy/paste the codes below:
