The term is less widely known than that of physical labour, yet work involving emotional labour is demanding, skilled and requires experience. Emotional labour is an aspect of many occupations, but is more prevalent in the caring professions. Offering comfort and showing empathy are important nursing skills because nurses sustain the morale of patients, reassure those who are experiencing pain or anxiety, and comfort bereaved relatives.

Questionnaires were mailed at four time points over one-year post-treatment to two prospectively-recruited cohorts: A, patients entering follow-up and receiving OPFU pre-implementation of PTFU; B, patients entering follow-up (FU) and receiving either OPFU (B1) or PTFU (B2) post-implementation of PTFU. Bi-variate tests were used to compare patient characteristics and outcomes eight months after entering follow-up (generic and cancer-specific quality of life (QoL), satisfaction). Regression analysis explored associations between follow-up model and outcomes. Resource implications and costs of models were compared. Patients in Cohort B1 were significantly more likely to have received chemotherapy (p < 0.001), radiotherapy (p < 0.05), and reported poorer QoL (p = 0.001). Having a longstanding co-morbid condition was the most important determinant ...

It employs more than 1,100 at its U.S.-based headquarters and multiple manufacturing facilities. As a contract manufacturer of products within a highly regulated industry, it is critical that the entire operation maintain a fully integrated quality and compliance management system to both ensure its own sustainability and to secure confidence among its customers who have entrusted it with the care of their assets. Challenge Until 2009, this company had been managing internal documentation and change control, training, customer complaints, nonconformances, CAPAs, and audit preparations through disparate and primarily manual processes. As a result, there have been multiple non-value added action items required of various departments, and a growing need to improve compliance in those areas.

Mediators then meet to discuss possible solutions. 'Mediators encourage individuals to be as open and honest as possible and to find solutions themselves. That way they don't feel a resolution has been imposed on them,' says Mr Smithson.

The children selected are often unable to have such a holiday with their families because they require 24-hour help with their health needs. Many of the children have never been away from their parents or the UK before. Each escort is responsible for the care of two children during the daytime, until a team of night nurses takes over. Care of these children can involve complex communication, urinary catheterisation, dialysis, stoma care, ventilation, wound care, seizure management, oral and gastrostomy care, washing, dressing, medicines management, and moving and handling. I feel honoured and privileged to be part of such a great organisation. Dreamflight is a life-changing experience – for the children who take part and the volunteers who accompany them NS

Nurses can promote high quality care for this vulnerable population by examining the effect of social isolation and exclusion on the quality of services received by older people, as well as barriers to equal access for referral and treatment. After reading this article and completing the time out activities you should be able to: 4Recognise the effect of an increasingly ageing population on the NHS. 4Describe methods of preventing age discrimination in the healthcare setting. 4Outline the importance of social inclusion in the health and wellbeing of older people. 4Understand the need to distinguish mental health issues from age-related cognitive decline. 4Apply appropriate policies and guidance when providing care for older people. 4Implement strategies to support government initiatives aimed at reducing inequalities in health care for older people.
