Whitman Middle School is located in Northwest Seattle, in a residential area. Currently, we have 1060 students with over 30% students of color, 30% in Advanced English or Math, 10% in Special Education, and 7% in ELL/Bilingual. We have over 90 staff members, with 57 classroom teachers, working together to assist students' learning in grades 6, 7, and 8. Each grade has about 350 students.

It just occured to me that no one really knows about this yet. Seeing as this could be a problem, I would like to take this oppurtunity to announce that there is a Gay Straight Alliance forming at Whitman. The first meeting will be on Feburary 17 from 2:30 to 3:30. The location has yet to be announced because we still need to find a teacher who isn't busy on Thursdays. This is a part of the ASAP program but if you don't want your parents to know talk to Emily (Canning), Ragna, Sonia or me about it. Also, this isn't just for people who are gay or questioning. Anyone who had even the slightest interest in the program should join. Also, if you know of a teacher who is free Thursdays after school and would possibly be willing to supervise us, talk to me.

Mines on Vasco da Gama.This is what I have so far:Lia KostGeography Period 6October 14th, 2004 Vasco da Gama was an outstanding explorer in the late 1400s. Originally his father had been chosen for the voyage to India, then his brother was said to had turned down the exposition as well. The trip needed to be made, and as a last choice, King Emmanuel looked to Vasco to complete the mission. So knowing this, he set out for what the world at that time, thought to be impossible. Vasco da Gama was born in Sines, Portugal in 1469. His father was the towns governor so he was highly educated as a noblemen and served in the court of King Joao II. He served as a navel officer, and in 1492 he commanded a defense of Portuguese colonies from the French on the coast of Guinea. Then he was given the mission to take command of the first Portuguese expedition around Africa to India. On July 8th, 1497 he and his crew planned and equipped four ships. Paulo, his brother, commanded the Sao (Saint) Rafael and Goncalo Alvares commanded the flagship Sao Gabriel. The other two ships, were the Starship, and the Berrio. Most of the men working on the ships were convicts, and were treated as expendable. da Gama set out from Lisbon, Portugal, then rounded the Cape of Good Hope on Nov. 22nd, and sailed north. Da Gama made many stops along the coast of Africa in trading centers. He finally arrived in Calicut, India on May 20th, 1498. Vasco da Gama’s expedition to India is very important for the Portuguese. It led to many future expeditions. Also it opened many good trades for Portugal. It’s important to know information about da Gamas expedition, because future explorers (after his expeditions) can use that information to do the same, and possibly go farther. It’s important to know what is out there, and know more than your normal surroundings. I know, it sucks doesn't it =(
