The Olympics - Part 2 | [Aug. 9th, 2008|11:55 am]Creative Typography |

[**mood** |contemplative] Let’s look at some more recent Olympic Games logos of the last 25 years. A definite improvement most of the time. In 1984 the Winter Olympic Games were held in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. This has a nice basic Nordic look and feel to it. Unfortunately any mention of Sarajevo never includes Olympic memories, just how the unraveling of the former Yugoslavia plunged into civil war in the 1990s. Sarajevo’s Olympic Stadium was used as a mass graveyard during that period. The city has a dubious history of world-altering events. It was here that a political assassination triggered the beginning of World War 1.The 1984 Summer Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles and it marked the return of the Olympics to the US for the first time since 1960 and the first Summer Games on US soil since 1932, also held in Los Angeles. This take on the red, white and blue was a goldmedal winner for its time. The look and feel was common all throughout the 1980s and became a design staple and even overused. But the logo was as successful as the LA games themselves. Very dynamic looking, bold and iconic.Four years later the 1988 Winter Olympic Games came to Western Canada and were held in Calgary. I know the logo was a bunch of things like interlocking Cs for Calgary, Canada. The rings of the Olympic logo. A snowflake for winter. It just never did the trick for me. By the way, the vertical line at the bottom was to indicate a stem on a maple leaf, Canada’s national symbol. Bet you didn’t see the stylized maple leaf in there too? Way too many things going here. Plus do we really need the apostrophe next to “88″ to know that it means what year it is? Plus Canada needs to get a Pantone swatch book and give some other color a try. The red is getting really tired and boring already. The 1988 Summer Olympic Games were held that year in Seoul, South Korea and I never found their logo to be any great shakes either. I know it is a take on the ancient Yin Yang and the lanes on a track. The colors don’t do it for me and I also recall that their Olympic tiger mascot had a very strong resemblance to a certain cereal company’s cartoon tiger. I guess that one slipped under the radar of the folks out in Battle Creek, Michigan.1992 saw the last time that both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games were to held in the same year. The IOC in their infinite wisdom felt that it would make more sense to | |

Don’t Judge a Book by Its Contents | [Jul. 27th, 2008|11:39 am]Creative Typography | |

[Current Location |My Desk] [mood | giggly] [music | TV]I should’ve been an account exec. Or a media buyer. Or an account planner. I’ve never known anyone of these persuasions who has remained unemployed for very long. Even if they weren’t very good. It’s true. The good ones (and I will readily admit that I have worked with many good account folks) seem to hop around at will. Even the sad sacks who couldn’t write a brief, analyze a DMA or control a focus group of zombies never seem to have much of an issue, either. Just flash a resume with good accounts on it and you’re good to go. Need proof of your contribution to said accounts’ successes? Heck no! You don’t need no stinkin’ portfolio. You worked on the account. It didn’t go bankrupt. How bad could you be?Creatives, of course, don’t get this luxury. I know many creatives who are quite brilliant at what they do, yet can’t seem to catch a break. Why? Their books are, shall we say, good. Not make-Alex-Bogusky-rage-with-jealousy-and-brain-Andrew-Keller-with-a-titanium-lion great. Just books full of solid work produced for a bunch of non-visionary clients. Probably at middle-of-the-road agencies you may not have heard of in cities in flyover country that aren’t Chicago or Minneapolis. So these guys continue to look. Maybe they catch a break because they know a guy who knows a gal who knows another dude and they get on with a decent shop. But probably not. The probably end up at another no-rep place toiling away at sell sheets and arguing over why reflex blue went out of style in 1989.And that's just......................... Wow! Talk about a niche community, a whole LG devoted to typography! Neat name, too! Well, I am here to help today. I work for a company called GoJobs.com, and we have an Internet job board. We’re in the middle of a site redesign (sorry, I think we’re sticking with the font we’ve got) that aims to make the site deliver more targeted results to our job seekers. IF you wouldn’t mind, please take a look at http://gojobs.com/graphic-design-jobs.html (the jobs and the site itself) and leave some feedback, either through one of the channels mentioned on the site, or here on this blog. Thanks in advance, and good luck will all your typography related pursuits! | |

Identity: Best of the Best 2007 | [Jan. 17th, 2007|03:18 pm]Creative Typography |
---|---|
Previous contest "Identity: Best of the Best 2006" gathered 970 works from 26 countries in 10 nominations. This year two new nomination appeared in the contest; the contest itself is supported by ICOGRADA; there are more celebrities in jury. All works will compete in 12 nominations (6 nominations for logos and trademarks, and 6 - for corporate identity and package design).Jurymen of the contest and members of selection committee don't see the names of the works' authors, while judging. Therefore they are absolutely unbiased. Project selection (finally there will be chosen 50 works in each nomination of logos and 25 works - in each nomination for corporate identity; total: 450 works) will be realized by selection committee, which includes designers from different countries: Robert Paulmann (Germany), Olga Pourtova (Russia) and Bill Gardner (USA).All works passed the preselection will form long-list and will be valued by every juryman on 11-points scale (from 0 to 10 points). Opinion of selection committee members influences only on long-list forming, but it has no impact on final voting of international judges.Unexampled level of 10 high-class and world-known experts from international jury provides fair and unbiased points for works.Identity: Best of the best 2007 jury includes: David Carson (David Carson Design, USA), Erik Spiekermann (United Designers Network, Germany), Ken Cato (Cato Purnell Partners, Australia), Emma Booty (Landor Associates, UK), Alexander Faldin (fallindesign studio, Russia), Tony Speath (identityworks.com, USA), Cristian "Kit" Paul (Brandient, Romania), Ruth Klotzel (Estudio Infinito,Brazil), Minato Ishikawa (Minato Ishikawa Associates Inc., Japan), Ivan Chermayeff (Chermayeff & Geismar, USA).http://www.artgraphics.ru/best_eng.html | |

[mood** |blah] [music** | Love at first sight-Kylie Minogue]Hi. I'm posting here coz I need some more information about a font. We have an assignment for school in which we had to choose our favorite font and make something around it. The font I chose is Georgia. I looked up information about this font, and found out that the name is based on aliens that were once found in the state Georgia. But could someone tell me *why* they decided to dedicated that fact to a font? Is there a place where I could find out more about it?Thank you :) |
