I thought I would let you all know about am online competition that has just begun, modeled after Project Runway: Project Dollway.Project Dollway is the search for the world's top doll fashion designer. Twelve designers from around the globe are competing for that title. This is the first International doll fashion competition ever staged. Each week the designers are presented with a specific challenge for a popular doll. coendou Any suggestions on what to use to replace rubber bands that are cracked and falling apart? Bride Tracy has this problem pretty badly. Totally Hair Whitney does too, and the rubber bands are ones that I put in myself just a few years ago! They're not even rubber, they're a smooth vinylish type that I thought would last better, but I guess not. Anyone know a type that won't disintegrate as easily? coendou (This got kinda long - it's an intro post and photos in one. If you don't care who I am, click the cut to skip to the photos.)Hi everyone, I just joined the community. I've been collecting barbies for about 15 years now - around the age of 11 or 12 I just kind of transitioned from playing with them to collecting them. My grandmother collects dolls, including lots of Barbies, so I "inherited" the hobby from her. I'm not too big on the NRFB stuff - I like to play with my dolls and display them as they're meant to be seen, and I've come to terms with the fact that this is definitely a hobby, not an investment, so I'm not too anal about retaining value. Besides, if a doll is rare enough it keeps plenty of its value even out of the box, and if it's not then it doesn't keep that much value anyhow! I especially love accessories and furniture, but I have never had a good way to display them.During college I went kind of crazy on eBay - it's amazing how much cash you have when loans are paying for food & housing so you can pretty much blow the money from your job. :) (Yeah, now I do kinda wish I'd saved more and taken out less loans, but who's good at financial management at age 20?) But then the harsh reality of... reality set in, and my rate of Barbie acquisition slowed (and has been approximately zero the past couple of years). I also built a great display shelf out of plexiglass and plywood my freshman year, but it was thrown out by some dorm cleaning people as I was moving out after my senior year, so I've been low on display space. :(Anyhow, my husband and I bought a condo last year, and I've been meaning to put up some dolls ever since. This weekend, he was like hey, why don't we put out some Barbies? So we trotted off to Home Depot and got some corner shelves and dolled up the office!( Lots of pics under cut! Sorry the lighting isn't great, my computer with Photoshop on it died.Collapse )Anyhow, most of the dolls are back in the storage closet, but I kept out a small box of "experimental" dolls to play with their hair, repainting, etc - I got into some low-level customizing late in college (as evidenced by the perm on Tara Lynn), maybe I'll find time to play with that a little. I'm glad to find a Barbie LJ comm!Btw, I haven't been on any Barbie boards in years - if anyone was on Pink Chat back in 97-98 or Vicky's Boards the few years after that, hello! susan402 Sorry about all the knitting, not sewing. It's so hot for the sewing machine. I was always sort of turned off the idea of knitting for Barbie, but it turns out that a Barbie sweater is very similar to a Blythe sweater. I think this came out sooo cute!
